Movie was just too expensive and was always going to struggle to be profitable.
If this movie ends up in the $150 mark and loses $100 million there won't be much of an appetite for a sequel as much as a reboot, at a low dollar budget.

Even the release date kind of shows that the studio didn't have much confidence in this movie

Wow some serious flops going on right now.

Alice pt 2, TMNT pt 2, the BFG, and ID4 pt 2 all looking to take serious losses.

But the Ghostbusters coming in second to a movie in its second week isn't good news for them, considering the weak field that they have to contend with.

I can't believe how badly Independence Day has bombed though. I also didn't realize that X-Men had busted so badly.
Did it tho? It has a worldwide of 534M on a budget of 178M, only one in the series it didn't beat which was X-men: DoFP and that movie was setting the bar pretty high.

Without China, Ghostbusters will be a flop for sure. At least ID4 and TMNT has china to save it.

In fairness...I dont even know what to say about that one. The original was a great movie on absolutely no merits, it was just inexplicably fun to watch, this one seems like it probably should have gone straight to video.

Plus it needed a catchier name like:

ID4#2!: OctoCube!

I'm looking at the overall gross though.

It showed X-men at $154 million. to put that in perspective, the Jungle book has a gross of 360 million.

right, but that is just domestic gross. Xmen has 534M worldwide while Jungle book has nearly 1B worldwide.

edit: I'm not 100% on what they consider domestic gross as, just USA? or all NA?

Canada and the USA are both included in domestic gross. I'm a veteran HSX (Hollywood Stock Exchange) player....

Was a thing...I don't really play it anymore, I just have an inactive account that I log into every once in a while so it doesn't get deleted. At it's height i was very popular though.

I just got back from watching this, and my answer would be "Because it's actually pretty good. As good as if not better than the first, which was a pretty good movie, too."

Saw Ghostbusters last night...I was entertained. It wasn't a classic or anything but it was entertaining. I'd say a 6.5-7/10 type movie. Hemsworth was good and is developing into a very versatile and always watchable actor.

'Ghostbusters' star Leslie Jones busts Twitter haters

http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/18/entert...nes/index.html

The "Ghostbusters" star fought back against people who sent her racist and hateful comments Monday by filling her Twitter timeline with screenshots of their remarks -- and then let shame rain down on them.

The response from decent people of Twitter was swift, as users flooded Jones with well wishes and compliments, using #LoveForLeslieJ.

"Ghostbusters" director Paul Feig tweeted, "attacks against her are attacks against us all."
