Default Juicing thread.

Hey all, I'm trying to start juicing every few days to increase my fruit and vegetable intake and get more of the micro-nutrients into my system. I figured I would start a thread on here for anyone else that has good recipes, juicing tips, and/or any good things to say about what juicing has done for their own health. One of our wedding gifts was this "slow" juicer and I'm just going to go for it.

So far made a "mean green" which was:
Bunch of kale
4 celery sticks
1 cucumber
2 apples
half a lemon
and thumb sized piece of ginger root.

Pretty tasty...surprisingly so.

I know that you need to be careful having too much fruit in the juice due to the high sugar content, but I wonder if there are any other tips for juicing that anyone has come across.

My favourite is:

2 large beets
3-4 stalks celery
2-3 carots
1 cucumber
1 lemon
1 inch piece of ginger
1 bunch of kale

Similar to yours. I generally try to keep fruit from my juices and put either beets or carrots in to sweeten them up a bit. Then again I don't mind veggie juice that isn't sweet. Another thing that juices really nicely and gives your juice a bit of spice is bell peppers. I like the red & orange ones.

There's a good book called the Juicing Bible, and it has hundreds of recipes.

I don't want to turn it into that kind of thread, but what's wrong with fruit? What's so bad about naturally occurring sugar?

Natural or not, sugar is sugar, which = carbs which = calories. Your typical fruit smoothy from a place like Jugo Juice has more calories than a can of Coke. If you're strictly looking to get more vitamins and minerals in your diet, then vegetables are the way to go

The sugar in fruit is mediated by the high fiber content which slows the absorption into your system and avoids a major spike in blood sugar. When you juice fruit you remove all or most of the fiber making its glycemic index so high that you produce a massive insulin spike. This is generally not a good idea to do with any sort of regularity as it can be a factor in the development of diabetes. Fructose is the naturally occurring sugar and by itself it isn't terrible for you, but its better to avoid having too much pure fruit juice as it does have a ton of the naturally occurring sugar in it without the fiber that accompanies it.

Eating corn isn't that bad for you, but high fructose corn syrup derived from the same corn is terrible for you. Basically in summary: eating fruit=good, drinking a lot of fruit juice=bad.

I don't avoid sugars, but I do limit how much I have per meal, hence the idea of using more vegetables than fruit when juicing. Even some vegetables have a high sugar content and must be limited (beets and carrots most notably).
