Flames Practice notes July 20. Groups split into Main and taxi squads.

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
Hello from the Saddledome this morning. #Flames have split into more of a main/taxi squad group. 12 forwards, eight defencemen and two goalies are on the ice at the moment.

Ya that's just a tease. 8 on defense seem obvious but going to 12 forwards already is interesting.

Keep that third line together please.

I'd like to see Jankowski-Ryan-Rinaldo on line four.

It would become 13 when Ryan joins, probably.

I'd much rather Jankowski eat popcorn and have Ryan center Rinaldo and Rieder.

No early surprises/inclusions from the black aces in the training camp.

Aside from Ryan not being in Jankowski's spot, this and the D pairings is how it should've been since the trade deadline.

Honestly, what is the obsession people have with taking a guy (Jankowski) who has barely mastered his natural position on the 4L and making him a winger at a level where he has never played that position before?

I just think Janks has more upside than Tobi. But I'd be fine with either.

I am fairly concerned about the potential offensive production from the third and fourth lines.
Ryan is the only one who produces any points. Maybe Bennett if he performs as usual in the playoffs. Apparently Dube has looked good in practice.

But for the most part, you're really leaning on the top 2 lines for goals. The second line I have faith in, but in an ideal world, they would effectively shut down the Jets' top line.

Dube continuing to develop as a legit scoring threat would be huge for this team. He looked great at training camp at the beginning of the season but seemed to struggle a bit when it ramped up to real NHL speed. Hopefully with some experience he can carry this forward.
