I'd love for them to give it to Backs as well but he also needs to want that role as well.
He's struggled with confidence in the past and I think he'd be a proud recipient and good captain given his tenure here.

The second most deserving guy to me is Mangiapane.

Just off a MVP at the world's and him being a great ambassador for this team and recently that t shirt he was promoting it seems like a natural fit to me.

I think his team mates and coaches really appreciate him and it would be a popular choice.

Who doesn't like this guy?

Pretty sure it's gonna be Monahan. Gio and Monny were the only players with permanent letters, everyone else (including Backlund) switched between home and away.

So we go from:
C Gio
A Monny
A Tkachuk / Backlund

to:
C Monny
A Tkachuk
A Backlund

(or:
C Monny
A Tkachuk
A Backlund / Tanev)

For Years I've said Monahan is the next Captain and has been groomed for it. Sticking to that prediction.

Is the captains and assistant captains get to talk to the refs rule still relevant?

I hope not. He's not captain material.

I think it's a solid prediction, but I hope that isn't the case. Personally I think the captain needs to be someone who shows emotion on the ice, a guy that can drag his team into the battle when it's needed.

Personally, I still want to see Tkachuk signed long-term and given the "C". With the leadership support team around him (Lucic, Backlund, Tanev, Lewis, Richardson, etc.) and Sutter as the coach, I think he'd be a great fit.

To be fair, Tkachuk sounds like he is joking around. I think it's more being cutthroat to negotiate your contract because the NHL is a business. A team won't hesitate telling you it's a business when they cut you from the team/buy you out. It's a fair point of view. That said, I hope the Flames don't end up with an anchor of a contract to keep Tkachuk.
I don't get what I'm supposed to be upset about here?

No issue with them being tough negotiators. I don't expect people to take discounts.

How would any of us even know if he is or is not?

Monahan is too Patrick Marleau for my liking.

There is zero chance it would be Mangiapane. Likely going to be Backlund, Monahan, or Lucic. As much as I think Tkachuk would make a good long term captain, he needs to mature a bit and be under contact for more than 1 year.

What Eva!!! We need a guy that leads and that will be here in a few years . Eat breads ascension is still occurring and the other guys not so much....what he did at the world's cannot be ignored.

He doesn't quit and or take off shifts either. I want a guy who's won something and he most definitely fits the bill.

As I said I'd rather see Backs get it but everyone else you listed as declining and haven't done squat on any level for sometime.
Tkachuk has hissy Fits and says we haven't done anything here ....well bud you haven't contributed either so don't throw your team under the bus unless.you going under there too.

Lucic....no.... good leader maybe but captain. No.

Boring #23....maybe once he could have been considered but not anymore. Sure he's done some good things but unless he rebounds and stays healthy for once he doesn't get my vote .

So... which Calgary Flame player are you? Since you seem to have personal dealings with Monahan to know that he's not captain material.

….Sean Monahan has been in legit trade rumours for like 18 months at this stage.

I very much doubt he’s the next captain of the Calgary Flames

Tough call.

Not naming Tkachuk or Gaudreau as captains could be what pushes them over the edge and gets them to walk.

Lucic and Monahan could both not be on the team as well next year. If the Flames make any substantial move next year, they may look at trading Lucic, as post bonus he will only be owed $1,000,000 in actual dollars, but has a 5.25 cap hit.

Monahan could end the year as a third line winger.

Don't hate Tanev as captain. He hasn't been with the team very long though.

I see zero downside to naming Backlund captain. I think he'll be a Flames lifer, too.

For those saying Monahan, what is it specifically about him that people think says Captain?

I don’t have a horse in the race but I’m curious, because for me, he’s not even in my top 5.

I'm sure Backlund will get the nod. If somebody comes along who seems to be a better choice for leader then I'm sure Backlund will do what Conroy did for Iggy and say "Hey, coach.. uh... this guy should be captain instead of me".

We shouldn’t be naming a captain that has “zero downside”.

We need a captain/leadership group the help this organization set a higher standard on the ice than what has existed here previously.

I’m in no way blaming Backlund for all of the failures, but he has been a big part of the team for a long time, and I think I’d just sooner see the leadership of the this team start anew.

Right now the only player on the roster I see who I’d want to be captain is Tkachuk, but he’d have to commit to the long term for that to make any sense. So with that, I just say go with no Captain.
