It was, and the Leafs were irate about Lowry because he was the closest player, and also allegedly poor Saddledome ice...blaming whoever and whatever.

Also, I had forgotten that Jagr had a gambling issue. Didn't that come back to bite him again a few years later?

To be honest, I think that's unfortunately followed him his whole career and even now.
There's more than the "love of the game" and "hometown" hero status as to why he's still playing. My guess is sure he owns his hometown team but he's got a lot of silent partners and creditors that have backed him over the years gambling-wise that need him to make a success of this, or, at least, not fail.

Anything on Flames at Canucks March 5, 1998? That was my first Flames game ever. I'll never forget Ed Ward's slapper barely over the Canucks line that went in. I was so happy that my dad told me to quiet down.

That's right! And I believe, at the time, Garth Snow was going to be the Canucks savior in net. It might have even been his first game, but I can't remember.

in from home to help officiate, a series of potential new rules being tried out,
and the long, floating goal by Ed Ward referenced in the original request.

The following picture doesn't pertain specifically to this game
but I included it when it caught my eye from another game the week before.
When the Flames met the Canucks 6 days earlier in Calgary,
the teams were just returning from the 3-week Olympic break.
When the Canucks' convened for their first practice,
a few players were nursing injuries and several others hadn't yet returned
from Nagano, Japan.
With only 13 players available, coach Mike Keenan suited up
and played defense during a scrimmage.
Keenan played 4 years of college hockey in the early 1970s
but was never drafted and never turned professional.

Gosh, hard to believe Howie Meeker had been off the air since 1998. He was already 74 years old at that point, but went on to live another 22 years; he died only a couple years ago at age 97!

Anything from February 9, 1995? My first Flames game. I won tickets from the Calgary Public Library and my Dad and I went.

I remember we left a bit early to beat the rush and the Flames scored again. I remember running back to the edge of the seats (pre-reno, you could see the ice at the Dome from the concourse all the way around, kind of like you can now on the zamboni end). For some reason I remember the "cartoon" face of German Titov on the old style jumbotron.

In the spirit of that audio clip, I'm going to move my previous post of the first
Calgary Flames' game ever from where it originally appeared in the other
thread before we started this dedicated thread. I'll wait a couple of days
so that I'm not just flooding this place with one game after another.

Thanks bobbylouie! Sitting in the stands I had no idea that one of the linesmen was a policeman! I remember Roloson making some good saves and I was so overwhelmed at how much faster the game is in person.

This one is from the lockout shortened 1994-95 regular season that ran
from January 20 to May 3. So although this game took place on February 9,
it was only the Flames' 10th game of the season.

It's another one with a ridiculously long injury list that could be a report of its own.

Looks like your memory is good --- Titov scored with 1:44 to play.

Trevor Kidd got a tattoo of Donald Duck holding a goalie stick on his hip...? Wonder if he regrets that one.

And Titov had 9 goals in the first 11 games to start the season, but then ended up with only 12 total in 40 games. Must have been a streaky player.

Thank you for posting that. Brings back a really good memory of going to my first game with my Dad and falling in love with the team. My Dad bought seasons tickets a few years after that and we went to games religiously. Honestly, some of the best memories of my late father were going to Flames games, and this one was the start of it all. Truly appreciate you taking the time to put that up on here.

Not sure if there are any hockey fight nerds or old tape traders on these boards, but man oh man, I think there is an argument to be made that 96-97 and 97-98 are the last two great "Enforcer friendly" seasons. Look at those lineups from the Vancouver game that BL posted.

Middleweights: Simpson, Allison, Ward, Hulse, May, Bertuzzi, Staios, McCabe, Scatchard

Looking at those lineups got me thinking. When did the NHL go from dressing 17 skaters a game to 18 skaters a game? I have to think it was the mid-80s, right?

From when our group started doing these reports in 1961, it was 16 skaters
plus 2 goaltenders. Teams regularly dressed 5 defensemen and 11 skaters
but generally only used two pairs on the blue line with the 5th defenseman
often seeing no ice time, especially in a low penalty affair.

In 1971, it changed from 16 skaters to 17 skaters and in 1982 went to the
current 18 + 2.

One of the more amazing things was that in 1967-68 (the major expansion season),
the Chicago Blackhawks used only 5 defensemen during the entire 74-game schedule.
A 6th defenseman, Matt Ravlich, missed the entire regular season but returned for the playoffs.

Paul Terbenche was drafted as a defenseman and was available in an
emergency, but played the entire season at center because the Blackhawks'
depth was so thin after having 20 players poached at the expansion draft.

The wear and tear on the Blackhawks' backline was evident in the
semi-final series against Montreal and helped the Canadiens advance to
the Stanley Cup.

in 1980, this is the report from the ATLANTA Flames' first game at the
New York Islanders on Saturday, October 7, 1972

Coincidentally, Islanders' D-Gerry Hart, who missed the game on
October 7, 1972 vs. the Atlanta Flames with a broken leg,
died on Saturday.
