So this new plan, well, maybe it's the start of a different conversation.

But as tantalizing as the new plan is to look at, it's worth peeking north across the tracks at the East Village. There, what the initial drawings offered looked a bit different from what we got. (Remember the Venetian canals we were going to have?)

So in Victoria Park, expect debate and a load of design changes.

Michael Brown sums it up this way:

"If we're looking at a painting, we're not doing the final touches. We're doing the big strokes."

Metro reporting Councillors are trying to restart arena negotiations:

https://www.thestar.com/calgary/2018...ry-flames.html

Quote:
City councillors are hatching plans to form a new negotiating team in a bid to jump-start stalled arena talks with the owners of the Calgary Flames, StarMetro has learned.

At least 10 councillors are directly involved in or aware of recent meetings in which elected officials have discussed drafting a notice of motion calling on council to strike a new committee — one that may exclude past brokers from both parties.

“Initially, it should be new blood that’s on it to give it a different perspective than we’re getting now,” said Coun. Ray Jones.

“The longer we leave it, the more it just kind of goes away,” he explained. “Everybody right now is gung ho to get going on it, and I think we should take advantage of that.”
Quote:
Six months later, councillors are itching to return to the table but have been reluctant to reveal their recent meetings to restart talks.

“Stay tuned,” Coun. Sutherland hinted last week when asked by reporters for an update on the arena.

In an interview, Coun. Chu downplayed the significance of discussions to strike a new committee. “At this time, it’s just chat,” Chu said.

Lori Williams, associate professor of policy studies at Mount Royal University, said councillors might be wary of voter backlash given many Calgarians supported Nenshi’s position.

“I suppose it does make sense to try to get new people to the negotiating table so that any animosities that may be lingering from the breakdown of negotiations in the past would not be part of this,” Williams said.

“That said, there may be those who say, ‘Look, the mayor took a very hard line saying that he wants to stand up for taxpayers,’ and some of those taxpayers like the idea of a tough negotiator and want the mayor involved in the process.”

Efforts to rejuvenate negotiations with the Flames could be seen as yet another move to curtail Nenshi’s control of high-profile projects, such as the city’s gaffe-prone bid to host the 2026 Olympic Games.

It’s back to the bargaining table for the city as it looks to get a deal done with the Calgary Flames on a new arena – with or without the 2026 Olympics.

Ward 6 Coun. Jeff Davison, who chairs the events centre assessment committee, said the city is setting parameters for talks to begin and he is looking at quickly negotiating a new deal after talks broke down just over a year ago.

“We are really trying to get the money we would need from the city side of that into the next budget cycle,” he said. “So we are really going to try to push over the next few months to get a deal together, put a proposal in front of council and hopefully move on with what we have been trying to do for years.”
Please just keep KK and Nenshi out of the same room.

The initial draft of the funding proposal for the arena (and 3 other capital projects) was approved by city council last night, to the tune of $1.5B total for all 4 projects.

After years of delays and false starts, it appears plans for a new NHL hockey arena for the Calgary Flames are back in play.

Last month, Calgary councillors approved funding that could pave the way for a major capital project that would include an expansion of the BMO Centre and a replacement for the existing Saddledome arena.

The price range for a new 20,000-seat sports arena would be $500 million to $600 million, according to estimates from the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corp. (CSEC). CSEC, which owns the Calgary Flames, Calgary Stampeders and Calgary Roughnecks, paid a Detroit architectural design firm for the conceptual drawings that were first unveiled three years ago.

At that time, the city balked at the price tag, and, in 2017, the Calgary Flames threatened to leave the city if a new arena could not be built.

Now, however, the city is considering $300 million in potential funding for a grant project that would also include the first phase of a new Arts Commons and a multi-sport field house, according to reports in CBC and the Calgary Herald.

Coun. Jeff Davison, chair of council’s event centre committee, told reporters that formal negotiations have yet to begin but he’s confident that the committee will soon be able to bring forward the “right type of proposal.”

“We want to put our best foot forward. We’re being extra cautious and spending extra time to make sure that any proposal that we move forward with is our best position to be in,” Davison said.

“We know we have to try something different. What we do know at this point is that we have a willing partner who’s potentially out there and willing to invest a significant amount of capital with us in a facility that the City of Calgary will own – that’s different than what we’ve ever had before.”

Not sure if this is "news" perse but the City Assessment committee is meeting right now for the first time since March. They're annoyingly "in camera" (closed meeting) right now but 11 members of council are present...

They rapidly adjourned following the closed session. Davison says "we do not have a deal today... discussions are productive but they're not complete." #yyccc #yyc
