Plus Wednesday is usually a national game slot. I think there's an exclusive window in the evening at that point in time which factors in.

The NHL insists on every Western team playing every Eastern team home and away which makes fair scheduling almost impossible with all the Canadian and US tv and building restrictions and team byes. If there's lots of 3 in 4 nights, someone is going to get shafted.

NBA also has this problem but less so because it's all one country.

NFL and MLB have it figured out. Play much more in your division, less outside of it.

The NFL doesn't have stadium issues, its pretty much 1 tenant. They also have a 17 game schedule and each plays each other twice in the division, its not that hard.

The NHL and NBA share a lot of arenas, and they are used for other things as well.

Extra divisional games made the NHL awful, not to mention the terrible playoff format we have now would be overkill.

NFL teams only play once a week. MLB has a 162-game schedule. Neither of those solutions is applicable to hockey.

Ballparks rarely have events outside of baseball games, too.

Sure but I don't think Calgary needs to play all 16 Eastern teams every year. Maybe 8 one year and 8 the next. Then the other 8 Eastern teams can come to Calgary one year, 8 the next.

The building dates are the same, just different opponents. Not that drastic. Take the 8 extra games above and add one division game (7) and one rivalry game (Edmonton). You're trying to lessen travel and playing back to backs.

They used to do that. It sucked, so they changed it back.

When you're asking people to pay five figures for season tickets, they want to see the stars. ALL the stars, not just a selection of them.

- Shorten the pre-season and have regular season start October 1st (was Oct 10 this year)

- Book more back to backs against the same team for in division / in conference games with longer travel (didn't mind that from the Covid seasons)

- Still play every team home and away at least once, that sucked when they didn't do that

Honestly those first two changes (10 days more and more same city back to backs) would probably fix a lot of problems. .

And the large number of games against rivals actually diminished the rivalry.

Plus, you got a large number of games against non-rivals. I remember the 8 games against Minnesota Wild and that was terrible. Eight against the Avalanche wasn't awesome, either.

Not playing Montreal or Toronto even once in an entire season was also not good.

Preach!

Fans of loser teams love to complain about it because it's a convenient excuse. Meanwhile, winners win regardless.

If you understand it, you’ll earn it.

If you don’t, you’ll pay for it.
