News Update

Quote:
"With some of the changes we made, as our roster sits right now, both from a personnel perspective going forward and from a cap perspective, we just felt this was a move that made sense for us.

"You have to make hard decisions sometimes and this was one of those."

Never really gaining any discernible traction here, Brouwer, who signed on as a coveted UFA following a monster playoff on behalf of the St. Louis Blues, scored 25 goals and added 22 assists over 150 regular-season starts donning the Flaming C.

"I want to say first and foremost, Troy's a good man and he gave everything he had to the team while he was here,'' said Treliving. "So we thank him.

"I had a good talk with Troy.

"These are never fun things to go through. These decisions affect people, affect families, and you never want to lose sight of that.

"I don't think there's one particular reason these things happen. Sometimes the fit's not right. You do a lot of work to find that right fit but sometimes it just doesn't materialize.

"Ultimately, it didn't work. But Troy's a pro and we wish him the best.

"Just disappointing."

That will give us the cap space we need for in-season movement...

I think this is the right call.

Never want to celebrate a guy losing his job but keeping Brouwer around another year would be a huge detriment imo. He is a black hole and drags down whatever line he's on. Playing on the 4th line he'd either be with young players or struggles from last year and would be an anchor. Being there but not playing would be awkward and he could be disgruntled. Better to cut bait. This is the right move.

Agreed, had such high hopes when he first got here and got that first glimpse with Tkachuk and Bennett.

Only makes sense, considering so many of our young guys are getting ready to bust down the door.

Buyout now isn't a bad idea. You save $3 million this season and $3 million next season. Then you lose $1.5 million in cap hit in 20-21 but that's probably a lockout year. After that, it's just one more year of losing cap hit.

I don't feel bad, he still gets paid his money.

Chiarelli, time to talk to his agent! Finally someone to play on McDavid's right wing so the Oilers can move Draisaitl to where he belongs as 2nd line C.

good to see that ownership is still willing to pay top dollar for a winning product on the ice.

I had high hopes for T-Bro when he signed. He started out pretty good. Looked like a fair contract for the first couple months, as he was on pace for his career norms. Then he got hurt and never seemed to recover. I don't know if it was because the injury still lingered around or what, but he was never the same after.

But I think a lot of the 'hate' he gets was to do with Gulutzan's deployment. He had no business playing PP or top line duties. Fans started to turn on him when they saw he wasn't producing in those roles, even though it was the coach's fault for putting him there in the first place. But he also never played the rough style he was brought in to play, so it was easy to make him a scapegoat.

Overall a bad contract, one I hope BT learns from going forward. He seems like a good man and the players like him. But this is the best move for the team going forward.

So I guess they're going long-term with Hanifin, then. I just hope the cap hit is reasonable.
