Flames Flames sign 2018 7th round pick Zavgorodniy to 3 year ELC

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Calgary has signed 2018 seventh round pick Dmitry Zavgorodniy to a three-year entry level contract.

Had a great regular season with QMJHL Rimouski. 28G, 36A, 64 PTS in 67 games. Really jumped off the page during training camp, too. #Flames

That's how you use late-round picks. Go small, skilled, and under-the-radar. Love how Zavgorodniy is tracking.

If I am not mistaken, Zavgorodniy is the first Russian born player the Flames have officially signed to an ELC since Andrei Taratukhin in 2006.

This is awesome. Big fan of the pick and a big fan of the player. Glad they locked him up.

Great late round pickup with a decent upside. Love the way he's trending.

Also love that he's the type of player that gives the oppositions broadcasting team nightmares.

Default Flames sign 2018 7th round pick Zavgorodniy to 3 year ELC

I love this signing. One gets the feeling that between Zavgorodniy, Phillips and Pettersson one of these players is going to pan out. This is how to build a team.

Wow, that's really positive news. His scoring slowed down after an incredible start to the season, but he's got 4g 1a in 4 playoff games so far, and really should have made the Russian u20 team. One of the youngest players in last year's draft, too, I believe. Been impressive every time I've watched him.

I wonder about the timing. Is there any reason the Flames decided to sign him now instead of waiting until Dec 31st, like they did with Phillips? They must have really like his play this year. Great results so far for a 7th round pick.

Let us all hope, this signing works better than that last one.
For whatever reason, with German Titov as one notable exception and Oleg Saprykin as one half-season success, Russian players never did well in Calgary.

pretty cool. Hard not to love that 2018 draft class at this point, you never know how it pans out in the long run but coming out of this draft with a number of promising forwards despite not having a top 100 pick is pretty impressive.

Russia produces too many talented hockey players for the Flames to have not signed any of them since 2006.

It's worth taking at least one Russian in the bottom half of every draft.

Two in two days is a step in the right direction.

When I asked sureLoss Zavgorodny's estimated timeline for joining the Stockton Heat...
Quote:
Dmitri Zavgorodny - he can't play in the AHL next season and has to go back to junior. (edit: unless he was loaned by his Russia team to the CHL).
I wonder what the plan is now?

In addition to Makarov, Val Bure and, I would argue, Nazarov.

i love to see use picks on high skill/high speed players personally... this is the way the NHL is moving...

of late i have been pretty excited about some of the smallish players are picking up in the late rounds, the first to turned out is Mangiapane...

i fully expect one of the current group of smallish later rounders develop as well...

in the same vein as the old adage "You can't teach size", i don't believe you can teach skill and speed...and the NHL is moving to the latter, not the former.

The team told me that he's a direct signing to the Q, so he's back for next season for sure.

So Zavgorodny's contract will slide next season?

Naz is underrated as a Flame.

He had really difficult personal circumstances that he kept to himself for as long as possible. On off days he'd fly back to San Jose to be with his wife and child who was hospitalized in a children's hospital in California.

He caught fire in his last year on a line with Stillman and Bure. Was a really effective line for 30 or 40 games in the darkest of times for the franchise.

After leaving the NHL he had some pretty frank comments on NHL enforcers and steroids.
