Lindholm was 6 years 4.85. Seems like a quite the gamble with the limited sample size.

Exactly, they can't afford as many. Which is why they shouldn't have given one to Schmaltz.

Yes, which is why he had good production so far. But the question for this contract is one what line will he be playing going forward? Too soon to know. Therefore a bridge deal.

Lindholm signed for less than 5 because he had never hit 20 goals or 50 points.
Schmaltz has done both.

This is a high risk high reward contract IMO. That doesn't necessarily work for a strict budget team like the Coyotes. If Schmaltz lives up to his billing or keeps on improving, this can be a steal of a contract. But there is always the risk of a one hit wonder.

Lindholm at $4.85 with the Flames is completely different than Schmaltz at $5 .85 with the Yotes

He's 23 years old.
What do they do, walk away from him because he is looking for market rate on his deal?
Don't sign anyone because they are on a 2015 budget?
Are there guys knocking down the door to play there? Did he fall into their lap or did they pay a pretty good price to get him?

Once. Lindolm flirted with 20 and 50 a couple times. Coyotes have gone all in and are hoping it works. Very oilerish approach.

Good points. Must be tough to get players to sign in a team with an uncertain future. I think a bridge deal would have been better for the Coyotes.
This deal just has the chance of blowing up on them, and they might not have the financial strength to absorb it and stay competitive. For their sake, hopefully it doesn't

I don't get your point. If Schmaltz ends up their 2nd line centre and the Yotes can't afford that kind of money for a 2nd line centre, then they can just trade him to a team that will happily take a second line centre for that money.
Btw Neal had only hit 50 pts one time in previous four season when the Flames gave him a similar contract. I'd much rather have Schmaltz.

Bridge deal. Not sure why you're taking things to the extreme to try and make a point.
"We think you're a really good player, a part of the core going forward. But after only 17 games, we just aren't sure - how can we be? And because of that risk, we can only offer $4.75 x 7 yrs. Instead, let's do a two-year bridge deal (2 x $4m?) and if you are the player that you and we believe you are, then there is real money waiting for you on your next contract."
That gives the Yotes some time to see if these young players can take the team to the next level, which might actually put some butts in seats, and it will give them some time to see who the key players are.

That is crazy.
Maybe the Coyotes think they will be gone and won’t have to pay in 3 years& on.

Doesn't this circumvent the cap? I was under the impression that the highest yearly salary in a contract was unable to be more than twice that of any other year of the contract

That is only if the contract is considered front loaded.
Good summary here:
