Giordano named Flames Bill Masterton Trophy Nominee
https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/mark...hy/c-306220762
Quote:
The Calgary Flames announced today that Mark Giordano has been nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by the Calgary chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association (PHWA). The annual award goes to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
Quote:
"Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano is enjoying a career-best campaign at age 35, In fact, Giordano joined elite company this season, becoming just the fourth defenseman in NHL history to record 70-plus points at 35 or older. (Nicklas Lidstrom, twice, Ray Bourque and Sergei Zubov are the only others to achieve that feat.) An inspiration for the undrafted yet undeterred, Giordano has now played more regular-season games than any other defensemen in Flames' franchise history. He is praised by teammates as a leader both on the ice and behind the scenes and a bar-setter in the fitness room. This is the second time Giordano has been selected by the Calgary chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association as the Flames' nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy."

That's really cool, and a win would be well earned.
Is there a front runner this year? Hasn't this been the "guy that returned from injury/sickness" reward for years now?

Except for Dubnyk. He won it for salvaging a career after being an Oiler

Right, let me correct that sentence:
Hasn't this been the "guy that returned from injury/sickness/Edmonton" reward for years now?
So, the competition is Ryan Strome and who else?

No that's for AFTER they leave Edmonton and somehow do not continue to be a tire fire.

Typically there’s an obvious winner or two. Don’t see one here, may just be me

McElhinney would be a nice pick. He's definitely persevered to keep himself an NHL player. Not easy to do as an aging backup.

It'll almost certainly be Robin Lehner, I think.

Yeah, it's probably Lehner's.
Nice to see Gio and McBackup on the list. Both started their pro careers with Omaha back in 2005-06. Now, they're having career seasons at age 35.

Yeah, Lehner looks to be the favourite this year.
Chara keeps on chugging along though. Just turned 42 this month.

I like how Gio and Chara are nominated for being old and good.

So are there some teams each year that simply don't nominate players?

They just hadn't been announced yet.
Since yesterday Columbus nominated Nick Foligno, Colorado nominated Carl Soderberg and Tampa nominated Ryan Callahan. Just Minnesota hasn't announced theirs yet.
