Default Derek Ryan's perfectly satisfactory usage

Honestly one of the most frustrating parts of watching this team is how Bill Peters continues to throw Ryan out there in critical moments of the game and for some reason, continues to get PP time. We were warned about this by Canes fans.

Between this and his inexplicable love for Mike Smith, does Peters start losing the room?

I remember Canes fans saying the same thing about his love for Ryan.

He has been regularly on the 4th line recently but I don't understand why we saw Ryan in the last couple of minutes with our goalie pulled. Can someone explain this?

He won a key faceoff in the offensive zone in the last 2 mins. Then corralled the rebound. He’s an effective player in the bottom 6.

Simple to win the draws
Which he did
In one case it looked like as soon as he won it he went to the bench but not sure as I didn’t see the number

I can think of many forwards I would put out there before Derek Ryan in a 6v5 situation.

It's definitely getting tiresome.

I try so, so hard to like Derek Ryan. I wanted him on this team for a very long time.

He's disappointed me to say the least. I will say that his best shift of the game did come when he was thrown out in the last two minutes and won the critical faceoff... but at the same time, he clearly should be utilized more as a 10-11 minute a night defensive specialist. You know, what he's best at.

I've watched a lot of Derek Ryan in anticipation of him coming here. He's a very low-event player in general. The difference between his utilization here and that in Carolina is that a) in Carolina he played with Jeff Skinner and b) he often played net-front on the PP, and was really, really quite good with picking up pucks in front of the net on rebounds. The problem here is that Calgary's system isn't very conducive to Ryan being able to get those chances in front of the net, and he doesn't really play with anyone close to Skinner's level of talent.

He's been disappointing, for sure. I've never seen him make so many bad passes as he has here, and his offensive play overall has been pretty bad. I do think that people are looking past his very good defensive play, especially on the penalty kill, and he's still very good at faceoffs, especially timely ones. However, for $3.1 million, the Flames need more from him for sure.

Anyway, I don't think he sucks, nor do I think he's a totally lost cause. However, he hasn't worked yet, for sure.

Guys... did you watch the game?

He didn't get any powerplay time, played a grand total of 10:02, and went 90% on the draw. He came out for 15 seconds late in the game to win a draw, won it, and then got off.

I get that we're pissed about that game, but Derek Ryan wasn't the problem tonight.

He should not be on the ice in the last 2 minutes.

He’s 9th among forwards in ES TOI (Only Czarnik, Dube, Janko, Hathaway average less)

3rd in TOI among PKers - and has the lowest GA per minute of any of our PKers.

8th most TOI per game on the PP among forwards at 1:21 per game

Id like more production from him but I have no issue with his usage. I’d say he’s being used like a 3rd line center, RH faceoff specialist IMO.

Also don’t get the complaints of him being on the ice during the 6-4 with under two minutes left. The first group was off and he was on the ice to win that RH face off and he did cleanly and a couple of chances came from it.

Not like he’s had great line mates and his 56% Corsi For is pretty good. His on-ice shooting percentage is 5.7% which is way below the 7.4% from his two seasons in Carolina. If that turns around that’s a couple more goals in the net with him on the ice and I think people would be less concerned.

Doesn't matter because he stinks too much offensively to even do anything worthwhile most of the time.

Derek the pylon Ryan used as the extra man made me sick.
I couldn't believe my eyes even when Peter's put him out there with with just under 3 min left.
Ryan is a 4th line below average player nothing more Peter's!

You guys are complaining about a player who was 90% on faceoffs being out to win a key faceoff?

That is all he's useful for. Anytime he touches the puck the play dies on stick. Maybe have him on but as soon as he wins the face-off head to the bench.

He's not even good enough to be on the 4th line.

Not me. I'm complaining about the fact that he's such a black hole offensively that he kills the play so, so often almost any time it has potential to become something good.

People are also missing that he’s been used a lot in the defensive zone and in tougher match ups this year. Which has freed up the Backlund line for more offensive zone starts and softer matchups.

More offense would be nice but he’s being used in a way more defensive role compared to the sheltered offensive role he had in Carolina and think that’s helped the team a little bit too.

Oof, that's a spicy take. I agree he's not ideal offensively but there are two sides to the game.

I agree with this. I think Derek Ryan has been good at 5v5. And I don’t think he’s overused at 5v5 either. I might agree with taking Ryan off PP2, but winning face-offs is important with the man advantage because it’s the easiest way to get zone time.

However, Bennett, Czarnik, Backlund, Neal and Hanifin/Andersson might be the most skilled group of players we could ice for PP2 if we need a RH forward out there.
