No Amount Of Alcohol In Pregnancy Is Safe, Ever, Pediatricians Group Says

In a new clinical report, the American Academy of Pediatrics makes the issue crystal clear from their perspective, based on the available research to date: no amount of alcohol is safe to drink during pregnancy, period. No lower threshold of safe consumption has ever been established, and prenatal alcohol alcohol remains the “leading preventable cause of birth defects and intellectual and neurodevelopmental disabilities,” the AAP states.

A study quoted here says 10% of pregnant women drink alcohol during their pregnancy. http://www.livescience.com/52294-pre...nsumption.html

That's pretty common sense.
It wasn't that long ago that doctors recommended two cigarettes a day or to cut back smoking to combat pregnancy based hysteria.

Yeah, it seems like common sense.
When my wife was pregnant, she drank on a couple of weekends at the beginning before she knew she was pregnant. I imagine that a lot of people do that by mistake. She still feels bad about it though.

Probably given that I was born in the late 60's and my parents were part of the hard partying generation. I probably slid out with a drink in one hand, a smoke in the other and a gold coated razor blade around my neck.

When I went to SAIT I frequented the Gateway. On one occasion in the afternoon I saw a student who was pregnant "unwind after a test". My mind was blown from seeing a pregnant woman drinking a beer. I was dumbfounded and watched her drink that whole beer. She must have noticed me watching because when she was brought her second beer she obnoxiously half yelled at me "My doctor says I can have a beer or two. I'm just unwinding after a test, @$$4ole." Not wanting to be bitched at by an idiot I replied "your kid doesn't stand a chance with you, does it?" Two people bought beers for me after that. I felt so bad for that unborn kid though.

So is the UK just overrun with FASD babies then? I thought their recommendations were to limit consumption to a few units of alcohol per week.
I enjoyed the statistics based analysis of many pregnancy risks and myths in "Expecting Better", myself. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/cr/0143125702/ref=mw_dp_cr

Give me a meta analysis of randomized controlled trials before giving this judgement. That being said, there's certainly some issues with generating said studies.
You can't verify this assumption because it's pretty much unethical to study the effects.

My mom was prescribed to drink a beer a day during my pregnancy because she was "too skinny". She topped out at 118lbs carrying me. To this day I love beer. Coincidence?

I did some research on this back in grad school. I think it's extremely unlikely that a single drink would harm a foetus. However, they can't really draw a line and say X amount of alcohol is safe since that amount would vary from person to person, affected not only by things like body weight but also by things like genetic variations affecting metabolic rates. So taking the position that no alcohol should be consumed is safe with the present state of knowledge.

As a criminal defence lawyer in Northern Canada, I can't tell you how many files I had where a man and a larger women would both be drunk as a skunk and fighting outside the bar at night. After the police get there and charge the guy, everyone is shocked to learn that the mother is 8 months pregnant, everyone thought she was just fat.
In 12 years and one month, someone will be representing her kid in youth court.

Wondering if X is safe during pregnancy seems annoying. There is no data and no studies for so many things, because they really can't do so without putting a bunch of fetuses at risk. So basically anything you can think of (allergy relief, cold medicine) is all "It might very well be totally safe, but we don't know, so don't do it and suffer instead".

Just because there will never be a robust RCT doesn't mean all other evidence is invalid and no conclusion/recommendation can be drawn. I'm as close to a statistical purist as possible, but if you push too far in that direction you rapidly delve into nihilistic territory.
Everybody wants black and white answers from their docs, without realizing that virtually everything in medicine is a probability. A respected organization is finally drawing a bold line based on what the best possible evidence shows, and I applaud them for this.

A wife eats for two, a husband can therefore drink for two.

I think that saying no amount of alcohol is safe is good social policy even if it isn't scientifically rigorous. Saying occasional use in small amounts would be so grey as to give people the justification to drink too much.
So I support this from a public health perspective.

FYP. You wouldn't expect a child to do their own drinking, do you?
