They show 3% pop and 4.5% inflation, the Math appears to be correct as they stated. A big difference would be the municipal cost index vs true inflation rate which has some interesting debate around it.

The big gap is the first year where there was a 7% increase in spending.
That's not what the reporter said, though. i don't know where he got his numbers, but they definitely don't agree with the report's numbers. It looks almost like he conflated (pop growth + inflation) with just pop growth, so it's poorly written too. All he had to say was that city spending increased at more than double the rate of population growth adjusted by inflation.

It works out to 10% vs 16%.

It’s mostly driven by the 7% increase in spending in 2016 what occurred that year that led to such a large spending increase?
Maybe paying for the airport tunnel?

So digging into numbers a little more

http://www.calgary.ca/cfod/finance/D...eport-2015.pdf
http://www.calgary.ca/cfod/finance/D...eport-2016.pdf
http://www.calgary.ca/cfod/finance/D...eport-2017.pdf

In 2015 final expenses were 3.015 billion + .576 billion in depreciation = 3.590 billion
In 2016 final expenses were 3.10billion + .596 billion in amortization = 3.694 billion
In 2017 final expenses were 3.19 billion + .628 billion in amoritization = 3.818 billion

I don’t k ow the difference between the two terms depreciation and amortization but the starting point for the 2015 number being used in the linked study doesn’t match with any numbers in the city financial report that I can tell. This would make it 3.9% vs 6% for growth using inflation and 5.3% vs 6% using MPI.

I might be really screwing up the numbers here but looking at the 2016 and 2015 financials it’s hard to find how they used 3.450 billion as the starting point.

Edit: found where 3.450 billion came from it is the 2014 city expenses rather than the 2015 number. Page 28 of the 2015 city financials.

In 2016? I hope not. They didn't even have a plan then.

In 2016 they had a pretty good idea how things would look from Inglewood to Shepard. It's possible they started acquiring land and such at that point?

Pretty sure they were acquiring land at that point...the Shamrock hotel was bought in November of 15 iirc.

I want to support our cops, but it's stuff like this that puts a huge target on them at budget time. Really? We need a military vehicle for the SWAT team?

This just seems wasteful, especially when their only example of use was during the flood to get little old ladies who refused to leave out of their houses

It's all about deterrence. I'll be much less likely to plant land mines if I ever go crazy.

If they didn't have one, what would they do if terrorists ever take over the Nakatomi building?

And this comes on the heels of yet another tax hike by council.

The greatest mayor in the history of mayors!!

Quote:
Ward 3 Coun. Jyoti Gondek had her Stampede-packed schedule jostled about like a rodeo cowboy Wednesday, after Mayor Naheed Nenshi flew to the Netherlands in the middle of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth without bothering to tell her or any other members of city council.

Gondek says she first heard that the mayor bolted to Rotterdam to speak at a conference — in the middle of Stampede — during a meeting with the provincial government’s Municipal Affairs Minister Kaycee Madu at city hall on Tuesday morning. Madu has apparently repeatedly tried to meet with our mayor but has been seemingly rebuffed, according to some council colleagues.

“It was a complete surprise,” says the first-term councillor, who like all council members takes turns acting as deputy mayor for one month on a rotation.

“I would think when you’re deputy mayor and the mayor’s out of town, you would be given, at the very least, a head’s-up that you’re on,” said Gondek.

“My biggest concern being we’re in the middle of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, which has all kinds of implications. It would have been nice to know that I’m it,” added Gondek, who was reached Wednesday on the Stampede grounds.

“Forget the fact that I’m deputy mayor right now. In my opinion, it’s a professional courtesy to let your council colleagues know that you’re going out of town for something, particularly during such a busy time like Stampede.”
Really respectful and full of class ole Naheed is.

What a putz.

Wow. Just whine some more. Oh no she had to make a speech on Kid's day. She didn't have to do it. It wouldn't have made a difference to any of the kids.

The best part about that stupid article was this. So they would have cancelled the flight to Holland if he didn't attend...
Quote:
Nenshi — who truly does work extremely hard — clearly thinks burning up huge amounts of CO2 to be on a panel in Holland was more important.
and you know you are wrong when you are agreeing with Chu.
