Silver lining is that bodes well for both Canada's airlines. One less competitor in the London market. I guess KLM benefits too for onward connections from Europe.

I have a BA voucher. I wonder if they will refund it now that I basically can't use it?

Same. This certainly puts a bit of a wrench in things.

Weirdly, I did a dummy booking for October 2021 to MRU and it gave me a BA routing of YYC-LHR LGW-MRU as valid.

permanent doesn't seem like a sensible adjective for suspend

They were already on the way out before COVID.

Yeah, Westjet's 787s were going to push them out anyway.

Are the BA vouchers transferable?

WestJet axes more capacity and flights due to the new restrictions (and 1000 more employees affected):

From YYC it looks like the following routes are gone:

-LAS
-MCO
-Huatulco

That's brutal. And still zero acknowledgement from the Feds that our transportation industry is in crisis. As a matter of fact their latest moves are a direct factor in what WS is doing. Somedays I think that our government is actively trying to destroy the airline industry as part of their environmental plan.

Vegas is not a surprise as most people travel there for 3 or 4 days and the new testing requirement is quite a burden for the return home. Vegas itself is under quite a few restrictions and many hotels are shuttered during the week anyways so the desire to travel there is low.

Huatulco is sort of a surprise, as I thought it was a high yield route for WJ. I think the availability of the PCR test on the ground down there for return flight is the most likely reason the station was closed for the season.

Of course, I cancelled our flights to HUX 3 days ago, resulting in a massive travel bank credit. Had I waited, I would have gotten cash back instead. Annoying, but not like the credit won't get used for next year.

Well looks like we just lost our only operating transatlantic flight, KLM is suspending ALL of its 270 overseas destinations Friday due to new Covid restrictions in the Netherlands.

KLM was using the *threat* of cancelling their long-haul flights to get the Dutch government to allow their crew to be exempt from new testing regulations that are due to start today.

A few days ago, a lot of the click-bait articles had headlines like 'KLM cancels all long-haul flights'.

KLM's tactic apparently worked...

"The government makes an exception for crews, long-haul flights can continue."

Very disappointing and depressing in my opinion. I'm guessing that a huge airline support package is coming imminently. Obviously airline travel is depressed already but cancelling the travels plans for the upcoming spring for tens of thousands of travelers will be crippling to the airlines.

That wording of "reached an agreement" definitely points to compensation being part of it.

I sure hope a similar bailout is coming for the small businesses that have been hurt by COVID and due to the selfishness of our general population who refuse to take any responsibility for their actions.

hahahahaha j/k, that's stupid a stupid thought, they don't buy votes and contribute to his campaign so of course they'll get nothing. Let's just stomp the little guy to death. Or better yet, maybe they'll die of COVID or kill themselves due to financial ruin. That's much cheaper for the government.
