Default Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2020 - Round 12

It's time for the 8th annual Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking, but at a different time of year and certainly at a different time.

First a look back at previous years can be done with this handy link: Previous Results

Once again vote how you want. There are those that vote 100% on potential, some that vote 100% on the likelihood to see an NHL rink, others that apply a mix, some using the value in a trade. Completely up to you.

I'll run one a day until we are done, and then FlamesAddiction wants to do a one off list version to compare the results.

We start with 35 names so this should get us pretty close to a Flames camp.

2020 Results
1. Valimaki - 85%
2. Zary - 62%
3. Pelletier - 74%
4. Wolf (Run Off)
5. Mackey (Run Off)
6. Pettersen 42%
7. Phillips 36%
8. Gawdin 28%
9. Zavgorodniy 34%
10. Poirier 39%
11. Kuznetsov 43%

Kinnvall for the multiple arguments made for him over the last few polls

Next is Chechelev, (Francis, Nikolayev, Ruzicka - not sure the order), and Parsons

Kinnvall and Parsons are next for me. Going to vote Parsons.

Just glad that we're at #12 and there are still guys that interest me

Kinnvall! I’m thinking about Ruzicka next, getting invited to the bubble is telling to me how highly the organization Thinks of him.

I for some reason thought that our prospect pool wasn’t that interesting after 10.

When you’re 11 in and still have Kinnvall, Parsons, Chechelev, Ruzicka, Nikolaev, etc, turns out our prospect pool isn’t as bad as perhaps many thought.

Yeah I think this pool is 20 deep when it comes to interesting players.

Now before anyone jumps on me ... interesting is a far cry from blue chip, can't miss or stud. Just guys that have an element or two that is NHL projectable and with that a chance.

Ruzicka for me too.

I don't know much about anyone else on the remaining list, and am not voting for any goalies until they are doing something of note at the AHL level.

I would accept KHL success too, but it has to be from one of the top 3 pro leagues (NHL,AHL,KHL) for it to have relevance on eventual NHL potential IMO.

Nikolaev until he is off the board for me.

Then I'll have to figure out who goes after. I'm assuming Kinvall goes next.

There are currently five different players with a single vote. If you voted for one of them, how come? Part of what makes this exercise great is people defending their different opinions.

Parsons over Chechelev? Parsons is one more bad year from not being qualified. He's been a big disappointment since he has turned pro. He can still turn it around but he needs to have one decent pro season before I vote him this high.

Injuries have been his problem, but the talent hasn't changed. I agree that this will be a big year for him, and if he has a bad one, then Chechelev may pass him on the depth charts. But putting Chechelev ahead of him now, based on 12 games, is pretty premature IMO.

I wouldn't say that is based on 12 games from Chechelev, it's more based on three bad seasons in a row from Parsons. Parsons couldn't even crack the top 10 for either GAA or SV% in the ECHL last year. And that was his 'good' year in the ECHL.

I don't put a ton of stock into goalie stats in minor leagues. Sometimes the quality of chances is, on a nightly basis, comparable to those "Bag skate these ####s!!!!" games in the NHL. And on the flip side, sometimes really mediocre goalies play behind more veteran minor league teams that play a very tight system and don't expose the goalie to much danger at all.

You look at the minor league careers guys like Pekka Rinne or Jordan Binnington, and there really isn't much to write home about.

What matters is whether a goalie can make the saves he needs to make behind an NHL defense, in the NHL. How to evaluate that? I'm not sure there's a definite way. I know when I watched Rittich in the minors, I saw that talent shine above a guy like Gillies almost always. I haven't watched Parsons in the minors, but I know from what I saw in junior, that he definitely has "it".

Can the Calgary Flames find a way to harness "it"?

I hope so, because hypothetically, Tyler Parsons probably has the highest ceiling of any prospect we have, even including Valimaki, That's how good Parsons could be someday.

I hope he hits his ceiling.

But Goalies are a crapshoot.

Sigh.

I’m not convinced Parsons will even make a good AHL player so I don’t think I’ll be voting for him until we are down to scraps

4 years after his draft I don’t factor in draft position at all. Seems to be projecting just like Mason McDonald for us

Parsons is interesting because his struggles can mostly be attributed to his injuries. That’s a lot of lost development time.

He can get back on track and raise his standing as a prospect if he is able to pour together a full season while staying healthy. The compete and talent is there.

It’s a big if though. Here’s hoping it happens. The guy deserves a break.

I’m at the point with Parsons now, I need to start seeing some positive results/numbers in the AHL.

Since it is his day, as of yesterday he has 9 points in 7 games in the SHL.

He is 3rd in scoring among D men having played 4 fewer games than the two players ahead of him.

It is worth noting that Kinnvall is only a year older than Valimaki.
