Imagine where the Oilers might have gone had they not scapegoated Dubnyk out of town.
He’s had a remarkably consistent career, if you look at his numbers.

this is no brainer start the car laugh all the way to the bank for SJ.
As much as it sucks for 2 mediocre goalies at ~7.5mil for next year... acquisition was basically like signing a guy a month after UFA starts, and all there is is upside.
Worst case, you're no better off than you started, in a retool/rebuild year anyway.

WTF WHY?
Dubnyk. 50% Retained. For scraps?
I know Minneapolis has been slowly sliding into the 7th circle of Hell for some time now but....this seems like a slam-dunk win for San Jose.

Of all 66 goalies that played more than 10 games last season Dubnyk finished 60th in save percentage with a .890%.

50% retained too? This is shaping up to be more and more a win for Sharks.

Where have we seen this script before?
He gets a change of scenery and wins a Vezina?

I am not certain that I would take Dubnyk at any price, I think he is done.
He and Jones can form the worse duo in the NHL.
One thing is clear, this trade certainly cemented the killing of both of their fantasy values LOL.
With him playing behind SJ's ragged team, he likely has less chance to win the Vezina than Johnny Bower.
Minny obviously wanted to get rid of him and there was only one team that would take on even half of his cap hit.

Well Minnesota wasn't the issue as they were okay defensively and Stalock had okay numbers.
I'm sure he can bounce back to a certain degree under the right system and coaching, but he's turning 35 this year. A big difference from last time he had a big rebound season when he was 28. His numbers have been gradually declining since 2016.
With the goalie market the way that it is, there just isn't much value out there for a guy in Dubnyk's position.

Does anyone know how good Kähkönen is?
Can he be reliable in a tandem with Stalock/whoever?
He was the most recent AHL goalie of the year.

I bet they give him a shot.
Dubnyk was only 2.5M salary this year, so I guess retaining wasn't a big deal. I wonder if MIN takes on some bad money this year for sweeteners.

I don’t get the San Jose praise on this one. Dubnyk is close to done having fallen back each of his last 3 seasons. The Wild didn’t even play him in the play off back to back despite Stalock not exactly lighting it up.
I guess the Sharks are hoping last year was a fluke for both themselves and Dubnyk but I don’t see much upside. Either take on the entire salary to get a better pick in return or take a chance on a younger goalie that may have a future.

This is an odd move all around to me. I get that Dubnyk struggled this year but I still feel like they could have gotten a better return for him.
I also don’t understand why a team like San Jose would make a move like this. If there’s one franchise in the league that needs to start tearing it down and rebuilding, it’s probably the Sharks.

Sharks are 1 season removed from game 6 of the conference finals against STL (although they probably shouldn't have made it out of the 1st round if not for the obscene 5 minute major call...then again most teams wouldn't pot 4 goals in that situation).
What happened last time the Sharks missed the playoffs? Game 6 of the SCF against PIT.
They have every reason in the world to chase this. Rebuilding too early would be futile with the back end of these contracts.

Besides being a number of years ago, you shouldn’t bet on the unusual happening just because it has happened before.
SJ is an old team that missed the playoffs by a large margin and were -44 in goal differential. They were third worse in the NHL, and the worse team in the West.
They likely have to make up those 44 goals to be a bubble team.
How are they going to do that, when they don’t have a decent prospect base (bottom of the league), and their best players are older or even old.
They have a better chance to finish last than make the playoffs.

1) healthier karlsson (this extra break might have been the best thing for him)
2) not getting league worst goaltending
3) missing their top 2 forwards (hertl and couture) for 20 games each.
I wouldnt bet on it, but their is a path to respectability.
