He really protects the puck well in those videos; always seems to be able to keep his body between the defender and the puck.
Impressive

Glad to see him doing well after a major injury like that. However it’s just a glorified beer league according to some

Frankly at that level of hockey he should have dominated, its great that he played in a league that paid him and the other players probably got paid in the season end Pizza Party. But the NHL and AHL are several levels above SM-Liga. They play on the small ice, and the players are faster, better coaches and way more aware... .

His NHL equivalency (NHLe), with his 11pts in 11 SM-Liga gp, is 37pts over an 82 game NHL season.

Ironically, Puljujärvi has a similar NHLe.

Although one plays defence, and the other is an Oiler.

Good thing the discussion is trying to figure out where Liiga is vs the AHL and not gifting the player a top six role with McDavid!

I mean it's not a great league but I think him being head and shoulders above most of the league just proves we have a legitimate top four NHL talent right now in Valimaki. Which is exciting after him missing an entire year.

Regardless of competition, just good to see him bouncing back and getting some ice time. Will help a lot when the season starts over here.

those are top 4 for sure.
KHL isn't that good, and people always sell Liiga short. In World Championships Russia typically goes nowhere without their NHL stars, while Finland is for example right now the ruling champion with mostly Liiga players. (Of course 2020 games got canceled but the point stands.) People sell Liiga short. Even Finns do that.

When KHL teams play other Euro team, like in the Spengler cup, they have success on par with Swiss teams. I'd say KHL is on average maaaybe as good as Liiga, but really outside of their stars, the average skill level in the KHL is nothing special. Having seen some KHL games live, it's nothing special.

The best KHL players are of course really good.

There's no question IMO that SHL is better than KHL. It's the best Euro league and a tier above others, as proven for example by the European Champions League.

Ridiculous. Is that an extremely tall Gaudreau dangling out there?

Well that might be bad news bears for JP resurgence hopefuls then.

Valimaki was taking over a top 4 role here already in his last NHL stint so we have the consolation of already knowing he can play.

Agreed...he has a lot of time to make up for.

Just cannot throw him to the wolves if/when there is an NHL season and this will really help.

Ilves has become even stronger now after adding top Coyotes prospect Barrett Hayton to the team.

Gaudreau can’t protect the puck like that - the last Flame that could hold onto it that deliberately was Huselius (that I can think of).

People make it sound like his puck protection was something out of this world. I like Valamaki is a prospect and potential upside - but nothing in that video stands out. It was a nice play...happens all the time by a ton of players.

Come on.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that yes, if he were playing in Liiga, Gaudreau could protect the puck better than that. He does so in the NHL on a nightly basis.

Let's not get silly with the hype.

Oh my god his poise with the puck...

Is that a beer league team they're playing against? My goodness that is some atrocious hockey on their part.

Nope. It is a good league.

Valimaki is just immensely skilled.

To clarify, I’m speaking about the way JV is protecting the puck at low speed - Of course Johnny can protect the puck.

What Gaudreau can’t do is box players out the way I’m seeing in these videos.

Interesting comments from Ward today regarding a lefty playing the right side this season.

Said Valimaki is doing that now in Finland so he’s a candidate. Really liked Mackey during the pause and thinks he could slide over. Also mentioned Kylington.
