Default TOOL Fans: What's your "just the bangers" list?

Like I'm talking about your go-to, don't-bug-me-I'm-gettin-sh*t-done, list of bangers you put on from their catalouge?

Am I a nerd? Yes, yes I am.

Does Tool have any bangers? Honest question. I like them, and the drummer is good but I don't think they have a song over 120 bpms.

Apple music has the following 31 song, 4 hour 12 minute Tool Essentials playlist. I think they are being a bit generous and a few of these could go on the Next Steps playlist. I've highlighted my favourites. Also, regarding Parabol and Wings, I don't like including these as I normally play on shuffle, but they are worth including if you play songs in order.

1. Fear Inoculum
2. Sober
3. Forty Six & 2
4. Schism
5. Vicarious
6. Stinkfist

7. 7empest
8. Prison Sex

9. Parabol
10. Parabola
11. H.
12. Descending
13. The Pot

14. Lateralus
15. AEnema

16. Hush
17. Jambi
18. Invincible
19. Eulogy
20. The Grudge

21. Wings for Marie, Pt 1
22. 10,000 Days (Wings, Pt 2)
23. Culling Voices
24. Third Eye
25. Opiate
26. Right in Two
27. Pneuma
28. Pu####
29. Intolerance
30. Jimmy
31. Ticks & Leeches

Almost every Tool song has a pile of intricacies that you can really get lost in with a great set of headphones and a quiet place to veg... but a lot of their songs also double as just really great tunes you can just crank when you're getting work done or whatever... to me, those are the bangers.

My favourite Tool songs are a different than most: Triad and Ticks & Leeches. I think the Lateralus album is just about perfect and it's definitely my favourite. Other than that I love Forty Six & 2, Third Eye, Stinkfist, etc. I really love the different feel of 10,000 Days and songs like Wings For Marie. I could literally listen to Tool all day.

So true. Sometimes I just let it roll all day. Saw them at MacHall in the 90's. I still don't believe I was that lucky.

For the record, I also let A Perfect Circle roll all day.

Okay, now I'm SUPER psyched for my workout shortly.

I can't remember ever seeing another band live that sounded better than TOOL. I mean usually with a concert experience you enjoy the atmosphere but the music is expected to sound worse and less polished than on a recording, but with TOOL I remember it being flawless and maybe even better than the recordings. Seeing them is among my all-time best concert experiences.

Man I like Tool, but I find it hard to really get into their discography other than the 'hits'. I don't think I'm huge into Prog rock. I mean, I like it, but I dont often jam out to it.

I do like Ticks & Leaches, Schism, The Pot, Forty Six & 2. It's like I find myself waiting for the song to drop, and sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Guess I don't quite have the patience required to really appreciate their genius and musical ability.

Big time respect though, any band that can carve out their own sound, style, and almost their own genre is a great band in my books.

I kind of agree with above. I just can't get into the last two albums (the more I listened to Fear Inoculum the less I liked it) so the band has kind of fallen out of my rotation unless I'm in the mood to listen to oldies. Still I could listen to the OP's list top to bottom and enjoy it.

Those are fair points, for sure. As for the newest album, I mean, I like it... but, I don't know... I think it might be the "toned-downness" of Maynard on it that makes not as good for me. Like, his voice is really just a 4th instrument in their band, and on this album it's used somewhat sparingly and not quite with the ferocity of past albums...

Does that make sense at all? I mean, musically, it's a great album... but for me, it's just missing a lot of my favourite instrument.

Having said all that, I really wanted to post something I just discovered the other day. Tool has their actual lyrics on their website, and it's pretty awesome when you read them, as they literally look like they're just journal entries in Maynard's diary or something.

I know I'm fanboying a bit here, but when you consider he's just writing down a paragraph and then turning it into the cadence that he sings it with, it just seems like even more genius...

I don't get Tool but I have encountered so many fans of them through the years.

For the uneducated, what is so good about tool and which song would you have someone listen to to "get" it?

They’re one of those bands that have 4 masters of their craft. And they just have a great sound. Each song is this epic journey.

I’d vote Schism. To me it’s peak tool.

Older stuff
Stinkfist
Eulogy
H.
46&2
Opiate
Sober

Newer stuff
Vicarious
7empest
Pneuma
Invincible

And if you like those try:
Lateralus
Ticks and Leeches
Right In Two
The Pot
Fear Innoculum
Culling Voises
Jambi
Parabol/Parabola
