I think Chicago won. Calvin de Haan is a defencemen I have always wanted the Flames to acquire somehow. One of those defencemen that instantly stabilizes a pair. Hawks are busy this off-season.

Yeah big win for the Hawks. De Haan easily the best player in the deal and Chicago adds him for cheap

Hurricanes were looking to clear some cap space with that trade. Which might pave the way for other moves.

Does Kane have a no trade clause? At this rate, you'd almost think they could make hay by selling off their best asset for a haul.

But the Canes just intentionally took on cap space...

De Haan when healthy is pretty good

Don’t think anyone else involved in the deal can become an impact NHLer. Most depth pieces

With the Marleau trade? Yeah that probably caused this trade to be required

With the two trades combined I feel like they sent out more $$$ than they brought in however so maybe that’s the motivation

Saarela is 22 and scored 30 goals in the AHL last year.

He is a legitimate prospect and may play in the NHL next year.

This trade underscores the value teams are placing on cap space this year.

Forsberg an up and coming starter. This may be them getting their 1a.

I was hoping that the Flames would have gone after Forsberg. Too late now.

He's 26 and couldn't play on a Chicago team that last year lost Crawford for most of the year and had a very poor Ward in nets. Chicago brought in some guy no one had ever heard of from the ECL to play.

They obviously thought very little of him.

Goalies often develop late though.

Forsberg ain’t gonna be a 1A. He could fill their backup position though.

Curious to hear de Haan's reaction to this. He was reportedly very happy to be in Carolina and the Canes traded him less than a year after signing him

de Haan is also out 4-6 months after having surgery at the end of May. Might not be ready for season start.

That feels like not a great return for Carolina...they gave up the best player (De Haan) and the better prospect (Saarela)

And he plays the left side instead of who?!

The Flames already acquired Carolina's best Dman....

I don't think Carolina is planning to be a cap team, so actual dollars is likely a stronger factor for them than cap space. Marleau buy-out costs cap space, but not so much cash. Moving out de Haan saves both cap and real cash.

Makes sense for both teams. Carolina reduces salary without hurting their depth (since they have a wealth of capable defensemen), and add a cheap goalie option.

Chicago has very quickly improved their bottom 4 defensemen
