nice freebie for Carolina if the cap hit is only one year and they aren't in salary trouble...
can't they buy him out before July1 to avoid paying the bonus?
dumb contract to begin with

It’s a bit annoying the Flames were never able to capitalize on one of these cap dump trades early in the rebuild.
This is a great deal for Carolina. Marleau is still an effective player and only has one year left.

No. Signing bonuses get paid in full even if the contract is bought out.
That's why Lucic's contract is often described as being buyout proof. So much of it is paid out in signing bonuses, that there is very little savings in a buyout.

They tried. Riberio killed one deal and not sure what happened with the Cam Ward deal.

So the cost of a late 1st round draft pick is $6,250,000?

Isn't this basically for Marleau to go back to San Jose? I bet July 1 he goes back for basically no money.

While I agree with you based on some of the deals Dubas has handed out, it WAS Lou who signed Marleau.

TO fans blaming Lamoriello for signing the contract. If Lou was still around he wouldn't have made the ridiculous Nylander, Matthews and about to be Marner deals that have them over a barrel. And if needed he probably could have made a better deal to get rid of Marleau. Dubas is a terrible GM.

Why do they have to convince him? He’s under contract

He could retire and they'd still have the same cap hit (it would save them money though).
I'm sure he only waived his NMC on the condition that he wouldn't be a Cane for long.

So to move Neal the cost is about 4 first rounders.

He had to agree to the trade, so there’s already an understanding in place. Perhaps that understanding does NOT involve him playing there.

Except Carolina just made the playoffs. Shouldn't they be using the cap space to re-sign their players?

The only guy that they have to sign beyond some fillers is Aho.
They have 21 million in space.
They will be OK.

Carolina isn't a cap team. Also, I've heard that Aho and Pesce are on the block. Another Canes rebuild?
