I thought about Varlamov too. I think it'll be a Varlamov/Rittich tandem.

So were Lehner and Mrazek after showing promise early in their careers. They bounced back.

Personally I'd rather the Flames sign a UFA than give up assets for a signed goalie though.

I just hope the Flames sign/acquire a goalie who can conceivably put up a 92% for the season. I don't think Allen or Smith are those people.

Varlamov has done it 3 times in the past 6 years.
Brobovsky has done it in 3 of the last 4 seasons. So has Lehner.

I wouldn't be opposed to offering a lot to Lehner. He's proved it. He should be, and probably is, the the go-to option.
Trade away Brodie and Frolik to clear up some cap space.

There's quite a few interesting UFA options for goalies. It'll be interesting to see what they do.
Just looking at this year's playoffs, it's obvious that goaltending is extremely important. They need someone who can put a great season together.

I think Robin Lehner stays on the Island. He turned his career (and life) around and I think the Islanders organization were part of the reason.

Watched way too much of Varly here in Colorado and I would stay far away from him at any price.

Varly is way post apex and has really struggled with consistency game in and even from period to period.

If Grubauer didn't catch fire in February through April, the Avs would have missed the playoffs by a country mile.

Let another team overpay and have the Flames upgrade to a younger goaltender with more upside.

I think he does too. But if not, I don't see how anyone makes more sense than him.

He's the only guy that I would be comfortable giving a 5+ year contract to.
Everyone else is either too unproven or too old.

I think Reimer is a great idea. He would work great in a tandem with Rittich. His career save percentage is .914. He is coming off a bad season, but the two previous seasons he had a .920 in 42 games and a .913 in 44 games. If he could give us that, it would be worth it.

His cap hit is $3.4M and he's signed for 2 more years.

I wonder if the Flames could trade Florida Frolik for Reimer and a 2019 2nd. I'd like the Flames to get a 2nd round pick.

I wouldn't mind Jake Allen as much as some might.

Last season, he gave the Blues league average goaltending. The league average save percentage was .905 and he had a .905 save percentage through 46 games.

Allen is taking the lion's share of the blame for the losing. His value might never be lower.

At a 4.35M cap hit through two more seasons, the Flames might be able to get him for very cheap. Again, because of the similarities in the cap hits and the situation with Frolik, I wonder about Frolik for Allen. Because of the current narrative around Allen, I wonder if the Blues would even be willing to add. If so, there are two prospects the Blues have, which I would love: Kostin and Kyrou. I think Kyrou would be out of the question, but Kostin would be nice to have. He's a RW. He's 20. He hasn't had awesome numbers in the AHL, but would be worth a shot. Otherwise, maybe they could get a 2nd round pick or a late 1st to go with Allen.

One of Varlamov or Greiss is my guess.

Free agent route - McBackup or Smith most likely (1 year x $1.25-1.75M)
Trade route(longer shot) - Khudobin (1 year x $2.5M)

As an aside - goalie prospects I really like are Connor Ingram(TBL), and Mikhail Berdin(WPG) both are 1-2 years away from the big show.

I can't believe people are talking about Jake Allen let alone Jake Allen with a $4M cap hit.

We do have a Big Ern, who has a good rep for w what he did for himself and the help he has provided others. That could make Calgary feel like a safe destination.

I’d be good with Reimer too. But I don’t see Frolik with much trade value, maybe a 3rd on his own. He’s a guy that is worth more closer to the deadline IMO so I’d think we’d be adding the pick in that trade scenario.

Rittich/Reimer combo is a little risky though. The pessimist says you’re going with two backups.

I just don't want Smith back. Especially because he is one year older now. Move on from him and try to get a permanent solution in net.

Rittich should be one option. However, I still think you need someone else who can play 30 games.

Are you serious? Smith did well in the playoffs but comeon. For a large chunk of the season, goaltending was the only problem.

So were even more goalies who never bounced back. This isn’t a reason.

I'm very serious. We don't have cap space to make a splash in the goalie market. The Flames will have to move a contract to sign everyone who needs to be signed as it is.
