Default Good Text Message App for Android? (not rooted)

I don't want to root my phone, but is there still a good text messaging app I can download? The thing I don't like about the native texting app on my Galaxy S3 is the way it receives photos - they come in as a small movie or some dumb thing that "plays" for five seconds. I would just like to receive photos as photos that I can zoom in or whatever. Right now, if I receive a photo via text, I have to save it in another folder before I can zoom in on it.

I'm also hoping whatever app I use will retain my texting history with everyone instead of starting over from scratch.

I use Go SMS. It's very customizable and there are tons of cool themes for it, like this one:

I like Go SMS but I hate how they seem to prompt you with an ad every few days.

I use Handcent and it seems pretty good, no complaints at all

I recently started using Contacts+ which is a dialer, contacts, and messaging app all in one. Seems pretty good.

I used to use Go SMS but went back to the stock CM app when they added quick reply and other options in the status bar. Nice little feature.

I have a droid razr, but I only get messages like you describe from iPhone people. I always thought that was the fault of the iPhone and not on my side, but don't really know.

This only happens with MMS messages from iPhone people that put text in the same message as the picture. If they send just the picture it comes as a picture, if the send a pic/message it comes as some sort of slideshow/video type thing which is very annoying.

Does handcent allow you to group text message without receiving the replies all separately?

I've used GoSMS for over a year, but right now I am seeking alternatives.

I wish GoSMS had the new Android 4.1 notification pane features, so we could reply from there, etc.
