Oops I missed it. When is the next big aurora coming to the Calgary area?

Seeing some brilliant lights fade in and out already tonight from NW Calgary. Must be beautiful in the darker areas outside the city.

I downloaded the Aurora app on Google play and it alerts me when KP index at my location is 4.00 and above.

I can get pretty bright in Calgary, but the app will alert you depending on where you are. It even has a world map showing where the highest concentration is.

It was at 4.33 when I noticed it outside last night from my place just north of Nose Hill. They seemed to have fizzled out after that though.

I have a friend from the southern US that is planning a trip up north specifically to see some northern lights. Is there a guaranteed spot to see these? Like how frequent would it be up north in say whitehorse?
Also some seem to indicate spots in Banff are good, but should I assume the displays are still fairly infrequent out there?

They're very frequent up north and even on a weak night you can see them as long as you have clear skies.
Yellowknife or Whitehorse would be your friend's best bet. Yellowknife is more wide open so you have a clearer view of the skies. Whitehorse has mountains so you can get more interesting photos but they can block the view.
Wrote a blog post/photos from our trip to Yellowknife if you're interested: www.zentravellers.com/northern-lights-in-canada/
We went for 4 nights during the Easter long weekend last year. Saw them 3/4, the night we couldn't was because of cloud cover.
Most nights would be considered "weak" but still insane compared to what we normally see in Calgary and they got progressively stronger each night.

One thing I miss most about growing up on a farm far from any big city is that checking for the lights was as simply as walking to the north-facing window, turning off the lights, and looking out. Needing to download an app, watch for the alerts, and then bundle up the family and drive out of the city just isn't the same.

Agreed, it would be so nice to just look outside and see them. Light pollution..

Banff would see the lights about as often as Calgary does.
There is no gaurentee to see them, it depends on the sun. Going in the winter is a good idea as it's darker for longer.
Watch that green ring on the first page I sent, it will give you a general idea how far south you need to be to see them.
If I had to pick a place in Canada it would be somewhere more east then Whitehorse, something closer to the Atlantic. They are in the green ring more often than places out west

BUMP! Forecast tonight is Kp5, tomorrow night Kp6. This is the same coronal hole that produced aurora visible even in Vancouver when it was facing Earth last month.

Excitement building in the Alberta Aurora Chasers facebook group in the last 20 minutes. Solar wind speed is spiking. Watching for Bz to drop.
Translation: Tonight could be good, if the clouds co-operate.

So far like the forecasts were off and it was a dud. Stay home unless you're desperate to see a weak green band.

We went out when enthusiasm was peaking but didn't see much of anything. Good stargazing but that's it.
