We did Mexico City just after Christmas, it was an excellent experience. Stayed in Zona Rosa (Hotel Century Zona Rosa), walking distance to the big park Chapultepec. Access to the subway was a two minute walk away. There was so much to see and do that no way our eight days was going to be enough to cover it all:

-The pyramids just NE of the city. Unbelievable to stand on top of the pyramid of the sun on New Years day
-Xochimilco Canals, a Mexican version of Venice and their gondolas
-Chapultepec park and all its museums and attractions within it. The city zoo is there and is FREE. Museum of Anthropology was fantastic, Chapultepec Castle was gorgeous and full of so much of the Spanish colonial history
-Historic downtown was beautiful and just crazy busy with people. Loved it.
-Street eats everywhere and so good (and cheap)
-Use your Limebike app to ride the Lime scooters there (or Bird scooters if you'd prefer)

Really it was a great experience, and traveling there with our two young daughters (9 and 6) was no problem at all. Just setting off an exploring the city on foot every day was so rewarding. I highly recommend checking out the big city experience that CDMX can give you.

The wife and I did a couple of days in Mexico City just before Christmas as a stop over on the way to Huatulco, and would recommend it highly. We just caught a glimpse, but definitely want to go back.

Overall, as long as you use some common sense, the city feels very safe. We stayed out near the Airport and used the Metro system to get down to Centro Historico (smoking deal at 5 pesos each way, about 35 cents), and if was totally fine. Again, just use some common sense and courtesy, as in although we were some of the first people in the car, we didn't take a seat, just stood out of the way by the doors, as we had heard the cars get very full (they do!), and I'm not going to be that gringo who takes up a seat.

We walked for a few miles in the area, around the Zocalo, down the Calle Madero (pedestrian only walkway), around the Palacio de Bellas Artes and park behind it, and then branched out into the surrounding neighbourhoods a bit. There were a couple of deserted looking streets that we just didn't go down, which again, just common sense.

Obviously in a city of 22 million, there are people everywhere, and at times it can feel a little overwhelming. If you are around Bellas Artes, I would highly recommend Bar Miralto in the Torre Latinoamericana. It's on the 38th floor(37th?) and has floor to celing glass, and a stunning view over the west half of the city. Great place to get away from the crowds, get off your feet and have a drink. We spent about 2 hours there, and the bill was still only about $40 CDN for 8 drinks or so. There is an observation deck on top of the tower as well, about $12 CDN a person, and well worth the views. From there, you can take the stairs down to Miralto.

TLDR: Safe place if you aren't an idiot, vibrant, would go back.

Not specifically Mexico City (actually to the NW).Recommending shelter in place if you're in Western Mexico. Airplanes getting hit by gunfire, yikes.

Canada's Ambassador to the United States is urging all Canadians in Mexico to reach out to the Canadian Embassy for assistance, amid unrest and violence in the country following the arrest of a son of notorious jailed drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

"I really do urge all Canadians to reach out to the embassy… and they will get the information that they need," said Canada's U.S. Ambassador Kirsten Hillman in an interview with CTV News' Chief Political Correspondent Vassy Kapelos.

"We're being told that all tourists especially should stay indoors," Dahl-Olsen told CTV News Channel on Friday. "We're being advised not to go outside and be too visible, because they could be afraid that tourists would be targeted as in terms of kidnappings and killings."
