19 blocks 19 hits for Hanifin vs 14/21 for Dougie.

I continue to be amazed that this trade is essentially a wash production wise, with Calgary getting the player that's three years younger and under contract for six years instead of two.

It's still early. I like Hanifin.
Me too.

Looking at how Hanifin played in Carolina, he is no doubt capable of more offensive input, but also focuses on defense first which is fine. One thing I noticed from looking at his Carolina highlights a lot (and I know to take highlights with a grain of salt), is that even though he wasn't always credited with assists, he was often the guy that started the transitions that lead to scoring chances in clutch situations. There are no "third assists" obviously, but often the plays started with him.

He's a very smart and unselfish player.

slight lane change for this topic ...

Thought I'd look at Hanifin vs Nurse since that was a big comparable coming out of Edmonton when their contracts were up this summer.

The Edmonton thought was Nurse is an emerging top pairing dman while Hanifin was a sheltered player in Carolina that would be exposed in Calgary when he's leaned on more.

Analytics
CF%
Hanifin 54.32%
Nurse 45.80%

SCF%
Hanifin 51.92%
Nurse 46.71%

HDCF%
Hanifin 50.38%
Nurse 45.00%

Hanifin cleans up across the board in all metrics. But the Flames are a better team so we look at relative metrics for each player.

Relative to their teams
CF%
Hanifin -0.58%
Nurse -6.86%

SCF%
Hanifin -1.25%
Nurse -6.64%

HDCF%
Hanifin +1.60%
Nurse -8.55%

Nurse getting crushed compared to his Oiler teammates, while Hanifin is close to zero or actually ahead of his teammates in high danger splits.

Nurse plays with Kris Russell which isn't good for metrics. Hanifin has had his season split from a rookie & Stone diet to Hamonic.

Counting stats
Nurse 4 assists
Hanifin 3 assists

Neither setting the world afire.

Quality of Competition (sheltering)
Hanifin ranked 4th in Calgary (D) for difficulty of opponents 28.84%
Nurse ranked 3rd in Edmonton (D) for difficulty of opponents 29.23%

Quality of Teammates
Hanifin ranked 5th in Calgary (D) for quality of teammates 27.64%
Nurse ranked 4th in Edmonton (D) for quality of teammates 28.06%

Looks like five on five Nurse is being used as a 3/4, while Hanifin is a 4.

Ice Time (5 on 5)
Hanifin
Nurse 19 min / game
Hanifin 16 min / game

Once again, Nurse more usage, but Hanifin no longer sheltered as a 5/6 like he was in Carolina.

^All I got from that was Edmonton is No Good. E = NG should always be factored into any equation.

How to they compare on actually preventing goals? I appreciate all these analyses but I don’t understand why you mostly ignore actual scoring events in your write-ups.

So actual goal counts?

Nurse has been on the ice for 6 5 on 5 goals for and 13 against ... -7
Hanifin has been on the ice for 9 5 on 5 goals for and 11 against ... -2

Their expected goals for and against

Nurse 11.2 - 12.1 = -.9
Hanifin 13.1 - 11.9 = +1.2

So Nurse is getting crushed in the shooting stats and underperforming even them in scoring stats.....ugly!

I heard that Hamilton had been taken off the pairing with Slavin who went back to his previous year partner. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Dougie there.

They're good fans down there. Not too many of them, but good fans.

There are a lot of transplanted Northerners in the Carolinas, and there have been a lot of small-town hockey teams in fly-by-night minor leagues. Those things give them a good base to work with. Still, it's a niche sport – but that has its advantages too.

What you don't get down there are the bozos, the casual fans who know nothing about the game but feel obligated to spout off with uninformed opinions. (You know – fans like me.) They're applying their stupidity to football, basketball, or NASCAR, and if they ever accidentally watched five minutes of an NHL game, they gave it up because they couldn't see where the hockeyball was.

Hanifin has been more impactful in 17 games with Calgary this season, than Hamilton did in his entire tenure with Calgary. Hanifin has twice the heart than Hamilton, and skates just as well, probably better, with out the stupid bone head plays game after game.
Also, did I mention Hanifin is 4 years younger than Dougie?
Hanifin > Hamilton

Okay I get that people didn’t like Hamilton but this is simply absurd. Hanifin might be doing better than Hamilton this season but to dismiss Hamilton’s offensive contributions over three years because of a few defensive errors is ridiculous.
