I wonder if teams that spent assets for faster might get compensation picks because of this. Like 1 round after the pick you dealt kind of thing.

At least this is a somewhat fun implication to discuss. Unlike everything else.

It won't be fun if the Oilers somehow get to draft 1st overall due to a canceled season.

The Flames will pick around 15th overall. There's a number of defensemen available around there that I'd like to see them take. I know you're supposed to pick the best available player, but it's a position the organization is in dire need of.

How do you figure 15? They are currently in a playoff spot, so the first 15 would go to the non-playoff teams. Maybe 16th?

Wouldnt shock me if the season is done and no playoffs that they do a 31 team lottery. Percentages favor the usual standing s set up.

but if you have had multiple #1 picks in the last 15 years your % is 0. I'd be good with that.

In terms of points the Flames are tied for 16th in the NHL (and are even lower if you go by point % I think). Not sure what relevance being a "playoff team" would have in a season without playoffs.
I can't think of a fair means of determining the draft order in a cancelled season that doesn't see the Flames picking at least 14th overall.

I assume they would simply figure out the draft order based on the previous method, or as close as they could. That would mean ranking teams based on winning %, and using the usual top 16 playoff teams get the last 16 picks.
if the theory is that if the season is cancelled and the playoffs go ahead, Calgary would be ranked # 8 in its conference, they should be considered a "playoff team" for the draft as well.
But I see your point.

I think the Flames could really boost their RW - Right shot depth in this coming draft. Some really good options in the first 2-3 rounds, here are some names that I think they should target.
Dawson Mercer (RW, Canada, Chicoutimi QMJHL) 6'0 179lbs (1st round option)
"Mercer is the kid from the Q that is really rising on most lists. He scored 30 goals in that league last season, so it’s not like Mercer came out of nowhere, but he’s been a consistent force this season. Mercer plays bigger than he is — sort of like Brad Marchand in that sense — and he’s got a real nose for the net with a finisher’s touch."
Jack Quinn (RW, Canada, Ottawa OHL) 5'11 176lbs (1st round option)
"Quinn is a very talented offensive playmaker who possesses dynamic puck skill and creativity. He can prolong possession in the offensive end because he keeps the puck on a string and is able to maneuver in and out of traffic, keeping defenders off balance. Quinn also has good vision and identifies passing lanes well, anticipating where his linemates will be."
Seth Jarvis (RW, Canada, Portland WHL) 5'10 172lbs (1st round option)
"A smart, skilled player who executes with pace and excels as a penalty-killer. Jarvis creates offense with his vision, quickness and playmaking ability."
Ozzy Wiesblatt (RW, Calgary Kid, PA WHL) 5'10 183lbs ( 2nd round option)
"He’s a dynamic game breaker who hid in plain sight for a stacked Prince Albert team last season but is poised to be a go to offensive figure in his draft year. He’s a dynamic skilled forward who can pull the trigger and skate with the best of them, he should be a factor anywhere up or down the lineup on this team and is certainly underrated going in.
Connor McClennon (RW, Canada, Winnipeg WHL) 5'8 157lbs (2nd/3rd round option)
Lukas Svejkovsky (RW, USA/Czech Republic, Medicine Hat WHL) 5'9 159lbs (3rd-4th round DARK HORSE ALERT)
Lukas was traded to the Medicine Hat Tigers before the deadline after requesting a trade out of Vancouver. He was looking for more playing time and he got it after coming to the Tigers. He put up 28 points in 34 games after joining the Tigers and he was a huge part of their offense. He is an electrifying player to watch, he is a great skater and also very shifty which makes him hard to contain. I feel like this kid has what it takes to play at the next level and could be a real steal in the later rounds.

What would be the procedure for drafting order in the event that there will be no more hockey? Just top to bottom in the standings?

Flames should draft Alex Cotton, a RHD from the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
It's his second year of eligibility, but he led the WHL in defensman scoring as an 18 year old.

Detroit was 23 points behind 30th place Ottawa and were the only team to be mathmatically eliminated already, give them first overall.
Lottery teams 26 - 30 (based on point %) for picks #2 - #6
Teams 21 - 25 for picks #7 - #11
Etc, etc, etc
All teams with even weighting in the lotteries
