Francis has to be well connected - I can't fathom a way that he's reached the level he has without some kind of external help. He's not charismatic or likeable enough to overcome his lack of journalistic ability. The pieces he writes are not "shock jock" material, so he's not there because he's good at riling people up. I just dont understand.
His mommy, Diane Francis, editor of national post, author etc.

Paying $350 million or so for the franchise and then paying for the majority of a new arena is a huge pill to swallow. You would think individuals like that would have found a way to be a co-owner already.
I don't think they are interesting in selling at the moment either, but in 10 years when they are bleeding money I bet they will be.
What makes you believe that will be bleeding money in 10 years? They are modpack for revenue and top 1/3rd for profit so their revenue should grow with the cap and their 0 rent deal reduces their expenses relative to other teams
-"Wait, he's not going to be talking about it anymore but he has a talk coming up?" Uh huh." (re: King being done but has a talk with the Chamber of Commerce)
-What the Flames released wasn't the same deal that was put in front of council.
-Ticket tax would be debt taken on by the city (fronting the loan)
-If 'ticket tax is Flames revenue' argument is valid, then property tax being city revenue is also valid so city would be paying 120%: 'both are silly arguments.'
-Goal was to have public engagement on it. City's proposal was designed as something to take to the public.
-Land didn't have any value in Flames proposal
-Flames insist on Saddledome demolition
-The CRL for East Village has been successful but there is only ~$150M left in the 10 years and it is allocated for public infrastructure in Rivers District. Would require an extension beyond 2027 which means a longer deferral of property tax to the city operating budget.
-Already an arena on the land that hasn't seen development, so even if CRL monies weren't already accounted for no guarantee it would be able to fund the arena
-City is willing to negotiate what the property tax is, doesn't understand where team's numbers came from that said property tax wasn't viable
-City is at the table
-Wants a deal that makes sense for everyone
-Negotiations are hard, and should be hard

Are you sure on that? I assume a big reason for the new arena was to get an NHL team. No chance they would get an NHL team with a 34 year old Saddledome. Hopefully the Saddledome is still not the newest NHL size arena in Calgary in 30 years.
Where's the new team? Quebec needed a new barn regardless, they built it big enough in hopes of getting a team in the future, however with the 18k+ seat Saddledome there I think their chances of getting a relocation team is probably the same.
I found the whole thing incredibly smug. Just like every time he opens his mouth. Not going to go over well with ownership.
If that was how you interpreted that press conference then you'll never rationally consider Nenshi's position. I'm not saying you have to agree with him but that was the furthest thing from smug (except the tantrum thing but whatever, they did throw a tantrum)

The temper tantrum comment is going to piss off ownership a lot. Corporate type guys don't like being insulted during negotiations.

Did you type that with a straight face? That's like saying the NHL would move a team to Hamilton without a plan to build a new arena within 5 years. Not a chance in hell. Not sure how you could argue otherwise.

They were a revenue sharing recipient last season and they are bumping up against the ceiling on how much they can charge for tickets. Look at the resale market for the Flames. It's terrible. You can't break even on most games at season ticket prices. Besides small yearly inflation increases they are pretty much maxed out on the revenue they can get out of the Saddledome. The costs outside the realm of the CBA is going up drastically (coaches, management, etc).
Eventually they will to decide if they want to remain a cap team and lose money or decrease the amount they pay out on salaries. I don't think the fans will stick around if the Flames are consistently icing a sub-optimal team.

Is this a joke?
