MacEwan Hall ballroom closes Dec. 3 for five-month renovation
Students’ Union excited to update the iconic space for first time in 50 years

Quote:
More than anything else, though, the ballroom is renowned as one of the best venues of its size for live music in the city, largely because of its excellent sound quality. Artists as diverse as Radiohead, Sarah McLachlan, the Tragically Hip, k.d. lang, R.E.M., and Public Enemy have all graced its stage. The final band to play the ballroom prior to its closure was death metal legends Behemoth on Nov. 16.

He did a big retirement concert at the Bell Centre in Montreal a few years ago. Turns out he does this all this all time to drum up ticket sales.

i remember when he had that song boy in a box. we were teens and of course would say he is a boy with a box and laugh like idiots. sadly i haven't evolved much as i still think it is funny in a beavis and butthead way.

I heard that he's releasing a new album as well. I wasn't much of a fan of his in the 80's, but suppossedly he was pretty successful as a song writer.
Piece of Trivia - originally he was asked to sing the song Danger Zone for Top Gun, but turned it down to focus on his own music and the next choice of artists was Kenny Loggins.
Second piece of Trivia - Spielberg wanted him to screen test for the role of Marty McFly and Hart turned it down to focus on his music.

I wouldn't be surprised if its well attended. There's a lot of late 40 year old women who still love the guy.

I love how sad our concert scene is in a city of 1.3 million people that "our way" just means Alberta, these days.

I heard Toto.

But ... Kenny Loggins says he heard perhaps it wasn’t true

Kenny Loggins: As I have it, and I may be wrong with this...I was in the studio, and I had written a track for the movie called 'Playing with the Boys'... I heard from my A&R man at Columbia that they needed a singer. The story I heard, and I've been told this isn't true...But Toto had been offered the job of being the band to do Danger Zone. For some reason the lawyers couldn't agree on it, so it fell out. There was definitely some other act or band ahead of me, and it fell out. I just happened to be in the studio, and they needed a singer right away. I dropped what I was doing and went in, and the next day we cut the vocal.
|
We do know it happened in a hurry.
Who knows? Was Corey Hart the mystery act in line ahead of Kenny Loggins? Seems like a stretch.

It's absolutely ridiculous. Getting skipped for Edmonton is one thing but Lethbridge...? That's just sad.

It's a pretty weird tour: http://loudwire.com/judas-priest-2019-tour/
It's almost exclusively small arenas and theatres, then there's Rogers Place.

Calgary is really getting skipped on this one, as Judas Priest is also going to Saskatoon, Dawson Creek, Prince George, Kelowna and Abbotsford.
getting passed over for tiny places like Dawson Creek?
any metal fans out there really have to get to the concert. it's going to be so friggin good.
but yeah. if it's a small venue tour maybe they figured to have one huge show in western Canada to make a few bucks and cover the Calgary/Red Deer/ Edmonton people.

We are not getting passed over by those places.
Secondary tours are extremely common for mid level acts like Judas Priest. Sometimes bands do tours of the places that never get stops on the major nationwide tours.
This has nothing to do with Calgary and nothing to do with the Dome.
If anything, it is clear that Edmonton is a third rate ####hole that they're on par with Saskatoon and Abbotsford in the hierarchy of tour stops.

What's up with Dawson Creek? I've seen a few heavy metal acts that have come through Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Dawson Creek. Is it a heavy metal concert town?

They have a really nice event center that is decent sized and draws from a pretty good sized population (NE BC and NW Alberta).

If Judas Priest came to Calgary and played anything other than Grey Eagle I'd be shocked.

Alice in Chains will be at the Grey Eagle on April 12th.
AIC is my favorite band of all time but I have barely listened to any of their new stuff without Layne.
Going to see Cantrell would probably be worth the ticket price alone since he is obviously a HUGE part of what made AIC so good.

Their new stuff is good, too. Duvall is terrific live as well.
