Missed a wide open net in the second. Wide open.
Took a terrible lazy tripping call in the offensive zone. Ducks score on the PP with the GWG.
Coasts back late in the third, so close to Fowler he can smell his breath but didn’t hit him or try to check him and Fowler gets a pass through to a Duck for a breakaway.
Somehow Backlund gets rewarded by stepping on the ice with JG hurt.
He hears foot steps and before worried about getting hit gives the puck away in the Ducks zone to no one. The worst forward on the ice at a -2.

I agree, he was pretty putrid tonight but most nights he is bang on so I will give him a pass. On the other hand what exactly does Derek Ryan bring to this team and why in the hell is he still getting PP time? Does this guy have some kind of blackmail on BP?

I would sit Ryan the next game and play Eatbread and Hathaway. Let Czarnik center the 4th line between those two.

And oh yeah, I'm more than a little worried about Gaudreau.

To me a missed opportunity on a wide open net is the same as a soft goal. You need to capitalize. Flames played well enough. I don't know what it is about this building, just weird things happen. On the Getzlaf goal three flames fall to the ice giving Getzlaf all the tI'm in the world.
Onward and upward.

Lol, did they really say that? Clearly they haven't been watching this team over the last couple of weeks. I agree, the Flames have often been the better team in each of the last few games.

it was not a great game by backlund.
flames outchanced the ducks 34 to 22 and had 17 high danger chances to the ducks' 9. one goalie faced 38 shots and let in 2. the other goalie faced 24 and let in 3. backlund's off night was not the flames' biggest problem or the difference tonight.

Can’t wait to hear smith blame those goals on the team and not just him
Backlund was awful tonight, Peluso terrible. D did a good job generally, especially the 3rd pair
PP looked alright mostly, both units

Everything else actually looked good. All 3 goals against are routine stops so I am confident we win that game 8 times out of 10
|
Ryan getzlaf with time and space from ten feet out is a routine save now?
Wow. That’s a bad take.

This team is not going to want to bail out Smith for many more games. Eventually they'll become demoralized.

Can't win all of the third periods. Need to play better in the first 40 minutes, especially a full 20 minute effort in the first period.
We can surely put the blame on Smith (and rightfully so), but it's getting quite frustrating to see this team try and come back from 40 minute deficits.

Game Takes:
Ducks 3 Flames 2
- Flames throw kitchen sink at the Ducks but come up short
- Smith with two first period stinkers
- Gaudreau hurt?

I honestly cannot remember the last time.
So is Karri Lehtonen a UFA?

Crazy thing is. I think we can live a few games without Gaudreau if he is hurt. Hope he is okay but I don't think this year we fall off a cliff into oblivion without him bad. We can get by.

I hope to hell Johnny isn’t hurt, if he is we’re in trouble. Also, Smith needs to go.

Smith will say "We couldn't capitalize on our chances and that was the difference." Once I'd like to hear him say, " I cost us the game , I've got to be better."

Well, at least there are bright spots.
PP goal AND a SH goal.
Flames seemed to really out-chance the Ducks
Flames seemed to carry the play
Peluso wasn't a liability
Flames just needed better finish tonight - how many wide-open nets did they completely miss on? Yeah, Smith wasn't great either.. but it is also a league now where two goals isn't likely to get you a win unless you give the other team absolutely nothing. Ducks still got their chances, and made the most of them. Flames really needed to finish on some of those chances.
I don't think that Smith will start next game. I am pulling for him to rebound to where he was for the majority of last season, but even I have to think that the rope is getting shorter here.

Lol.... Space? 10 ft?? There was nowhere to go with it but where he went with it. Smith clearly guesses it's being passed.
