Every other year you use a 2nd rounder to pick a goaltender?
I like it

No kidding. "I've never heard this kid's name before right now he is a bad pick! The Flames scouts should've consulted me first, I woulda set them straight!"

Players get rated/criticized all the time. Before they're drafted, when they're drafted, and after they're drafted. That's what discussion forums are for

You're not wrong but informed ratings and criticisms are so much more helpful.

Exactly. And taking a look at my THN magazine, he was the 4th ranked goalie. And TSN had him below Gustavsson who was still on the board. I just questioned picking him first like in 2014. I'll trust the scouts. I have no strong feelings either way.
There will be more rankings this summer when Bingo does his Flames prospect rankings. Still too early as most haven't played in the NHL yet? Nope. It's a fun exercise and promotes discussion. And that's what we all want when we visit forums

Somehow I don't think Flames went off their board.

Outstanding pick, watching him all year I was very impressed with him. You can never have too many London Knights.

Can't stand using second rounders on a goalie.

Here is a list of every goalie from 1991 to now drafted between 31 and 60 that has become the starting goalie on the team that drafted them: Ondej Pavelec, Jose Theodore, Corey Crawford and Chris Osgood.
The odds of a goalie you draft becoming a starter are terrible in every round, but they're about the same in the late rounds as they are in the 2nd, so why waste one on a goalie.
I'll hope for the best on this guy of course, but the odds are really, really long.

Parsons is also very athletic. Could be an insurance policy if they shrink the goalie equipment to the point where being a giant lug who just covers the net isn't as helpful.

Odds are really long regardless of what position you take, which is why you take the BPA. Flames felt he was the BPA in this spot and IMO they've earned the benefit of the doubt over the last few years.
I'll wait to see how he develops before judging this pick.

With another 2nd just behind I don't mind taking a goalie. Just gotta keep picking them and hope one emerges as a star.

I would have preferred the Flames pick no goalies this draft, but obviously they want to create a strong pipeline of goalies in their system. Can't really complain about Parsons, he seems like a solid choice.

Even if you ranked Gaudreau has the best player in his draft class you wouldn't draft him number one because he'd be available in the 2nd or 3rd round for sure.
So when people say go off board they are actually saying would have been available with a later pick. Or worth risking he would have been available with a later pick.

It's something like 25% chance for position players taken in the 2nd round to play 300 games in the NHL. The goalie odds are way lower, somewhere under 10%. And if you look at the list I provided, even the ones that made it aren't very exciting.
Hopefully this guy is the 1 in 10 long shot.
