Osuna loses arbitration case. Awarded $5.3 million for 2018.
Next up Stroman, and then just all the pre-arb guys.

That must have been a pretty awkward arbitration case. Definitely a guy you want to keep but you basically have to come out an say you blew a lot of games
Last year and have some other issue that effect your on-field performance in the hearing.

Yeah, what a weird year for him. His numbers improved across the board, and were at an elite level.
Yet he managed to blow 10 saves which is more than his 1st two years combined. Plus he did have that unfortunate mid season battle with anxiety as well.

No you don't... you go out there and say last year in your third year of service time you did X,Y, and Z... we think that makes you similar to Players A,B, and C who received (Number close to the number you're offering) in their subsequent contract. Then Osuna's agent does the same.

Sources: #BlueJays in agreement with free-agent reliever John Axford.
Shi Davidi@ShiDavidi
#BlueJays agreement with John Axford is a minor-league deal with an invite to big-league camp, per source.

They signed Jake Petricka to a minor league deal too. Could also make the team as he's had decent MLB success before.

I could see Petricka having a season like Leone did last year.

Jays to retire Doc's #32 on opening day and wear a #32 patch for the duration of the year.

Ben Nicholson-Smith@bnicholsonsmith
Per source #BlueJays have agreed to sign LHP Craig Breslow to a minor-league deal that includes an invite to MLB spring training. He'd earn $1.25 million if he makes the team, possibly more with incentives, and has an opt-out at the end of spring training.

Could be a solid lefty specialist out of the pen:
Quote:
He didn’t fare particularly well in Minnesota (5.23 ERA in 31 innings), although that was largely due to the fact that other injuries throughout the bullpen (and some short outings from the rotation) early in the season forced the Twins to use Breslow against right-handed opponents far more than would be preferable. Breslow faced twice as many righties as lefties in 2017, and they clobbered him at a .330/.393/.542 clip. However, lefties were utterly befuddled against Breslow, hitting just .196/.294/.286.
|
Lots of veteran filler competing for spots in the pen now.
Albequerque, Axford, Petricka and now Breslow.

Crazy news...Jerry Howarth is out as the Blue Jays play by play guy. Stepping down after 36 seasons as the voice of the team.

I know they said he has some medical issues with his voice, but something just seems so off about him dropping off like this without a final swansong. I'm sure he's tried to recover in time for the beginning of the season but he wasn't able to and just bowed out, but I really wish he could've done one more season. I didn't notice anything noticeably wrong with his voice this past season, so it must've been recent. Hope he's alright.

In his own words.
Quote:
“I had every intention of continuing my career into the 2018 season but my health and stamina and continuing voice issues dictated otherwise,” said Howarth. “Who knew that I would spend more than half my life in Toronto with my wife, Mary, and our two sons, Ben and Joe, doing what I love to do most, reaching out to friends and fans alike across our great country to talk baseball? I am blessed and I am grateful. I thank everyone who has made this journey of mine so rewarding in every way.”

Tulo still injured. Bone spurs.
Gibbons told MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm that he doesn't think it will be an issue for the spring, but the 33-year-old Santa Clara, CA native will have a delayed start to training camp.

Man oh man that Tulo contract is looking bad. I think we all knew it would, but this guy just can’t ever stay healthy. Hopefully it doesn’t derail him, article says it won’t but I guess with tulo you just cross your fingers.

It drives me crazy that some players don't have this stuff addressed in the off-season, then right before the season begins they go under the knife. Happens in every sport, but moreso in baseball. I have no idea why, or even if it's true, but that's what I've noticed.

I wonder if Tulo's injuries have something to do with the artificial turf at the dome...

Wouldn’t help, but he’s been a bandaid most of his career. Often injured in Colorado.
