Just an honest, hard-working player that is really well liked in the organization. A perfect trustworthy defenceman for Darryl.
Darryl never gushed about the player when asked, nor did Stone play a lot of minutes when he was in the lineup. That doesn’t say “trustworthy” to me, but a warm body that’s a number 7 at best.
Given the number of NHL contracts, I think they need to move someone out for an actual signing to make sense.
What does his J Fresh card look like? I'm going to guess it's not so good. My stupid old eyes say he played his role perfectly last year coming into the lineup when needed and not complaining about not playing for like 60 straight games. He did use his shot a lot more last year than previous years and it can be effective. If he had to play 15 minutes a night for 20 straight games he might fall out of favor. But for the 5 game stretch when the team needs a bit of an energy boost he did the job.

This is from last season when the Flames signed him, so doesn't include his play from last year. He isn't the kind of player that will show up well on those cards though.
Given the commitment (and performance) he's given to this organization, why don't they just offer him a contract? It's kind of insulting to give him a PTO given the loyalty he's shown.
Because they still have to sign Ruzica, and at least another depth forward to know how much money is left for stone.
fyi, 2-way deal just means he has different salary at the AHL/NHL level. He still has to clear through waivers regardless, if I'm not mistaken.
True. I doubt Stone signs a 2 way. He's gonna say "I'm willing to be sent down since there's no relocation involved, but I want salary certainty". If he's below the max bury amount, there's no reason not to.
He was hilariously on pace for the best year of his entire career last season.
Guy was 4 points off his career high with the Flames (10 points in 82 games) while only playing 11 regular season games, and then posted 5 points in 9 PO games.

A nice reward for Stone's loyalty. A chance to showcase his stuff for other teams. And a backup in case the Flames move out some of the depth players ahead of him. I don't think this team expected a player like Weegar to be available to them when they made their depth signings in free agency.
I’m a big fan of Stone, he’s been given a tough role on this team and handled it brilliantly. There are better players that wouldn’t be able to sit out as much as he does while still coming back into the lineup without skipping a beat. Imo, he deserves a real contract, not just a PTO.

Stone's wife is from Calgary and he moved back here as soon as he could. I think even if he gets other offers he has a priority of living here and the other offers would have to be significantly better.
And while we appreciate him,, it's not like he is some unique in demand talent. He's a 7D and lots of teams have them around anyway.
I believe he is on the record as saying that he wants to stay in Calgary and if it means doing this exercise every season than he will. Even at league minimum, he is still making more bank than most of us that sets him up for life if he is smart about it. His wife and family are from here. He gets to travel with the team and live the 5 star lifestyle. Every team needs a #7 who can slot in, so he gets to live that role and get paid.
Pretty sweet deal for a guy who probably makes a lot of teams in the NHL. In return he offers the team flexibility and is as low maintenance as it gets.
Not a lot to dislike about this routine and glad to see him back.

also to add, he plays that 7D role perfectly. What he did last playoff was outstanding.
