Both the Canadian and U.S. governments closed the border to nonessential travel due to COVID restrictions. If Gaudreau is worried about that happening again, as he might be, it wouldn't matter if Calgary was 10 minutes from home. If you can't cross the border, the travel time doesn't matter.
Just speculating, but it's a possibility that makes at least some particle of sense.

Gaudreau and Gross overplayed their hand...that's the only explaination here.
NJ, PHI, and NYI must not have come to the table with real offers.
Honestly he should have just come crawling back if this was the best offer he had available.
