Hoping Phillips gets the shot… Him and Zary have been the best players so far this camp, but I’d rather have Phillips on the wing and Zary playing top line C in the AHL. I know it’s a stretch, but I’d like to see Phillips with Lindholm and Huberdeau for a preseason game, maybe some magic to be found… Knowing Sutter though, I could see them signing Eakins…

I think Pelletier will take the spot down the line in the season. He is just having a bad camp right now, I’ve watched enough of him last year to know that he is good enough. He will just need to get his legs going in the AHL for a bit

I agree. I wonder if Pelletier has a hard time generating enough intensity for camp. Maybe he's got an internal switch that ramps up with competition, but that he cannot turn off or on. As much as he has to prove in pre-season games, they all tend to be slow, sloppy pillowfights.

Doesn't impact the open 3rd line slot, but all I know is Mangiapane needs to get a crack on the top line with Huberdeau and Lindholm.

I think Zary with Backlund and Coleman could work. He's a smart hockey player and as Sutter said, Coleman and Backlund play the game the right way. That line has a defensive responsibility but with Kadri around it won't be as heavy. It could work.

I could see Pelletier in the role as well. He hasn't flashed offensively but his positioning and play away from the puck is very good. That could be a good shutdown line.

But knowing Sutter I think Eakin gets that spot. He likes his gritty vets and he wouldn't't be terrible on that line either.

I do think after preseason thus far it should be Zary. Try him out for 9 games and insulate him on Backlund’s wing and see how he fares. We need the best player available, and he has taken that spot, and while I understand that some want him to run the first line Centre spot with the Wranglers, I don’t see an issue with trying to plug him into a winger spot on the big club. With Lindholm, Kadri, and Backlund (who I don’t see leaving the team after his contract) the centre position is pretty blocked up for the foreseeable future.

The 9 games doesn't apply for AHL players, they burn a year of the contract regardless. Zary is better suited getting big minutes and special teams time in the AHL.

Disagree....at this point anyhow.

You just signed a huge UFA deal with Kadri, you have to give him someone to play with beyond Dube or Coleman etc. The point of signing him was to establish 2 true offensive lines that can play solid 2 way hockey.

Maybe he and Toffoli strike some chemistry down the line, but to start, at least put him in a position to have some offensive success.

I think Zary has earned the opportunity to play in the bigs to start.

I saw Zary is a center, and he hasn’t taken a center spot away from any of the top three.

I imagine a 9 game audition is pretty easy when the wranglers are also in the same building

Hoping Ruzicka gets a shot for the 3rd line winger spot these last few games. If he earns it he earns it

Zary is on a Pro contract. The whole "9 games" thing means nothing here

I sure hope not. Lindholm is an NHL first line centre (at least).

Would remove the reference to Kylington and add Meloche

I expect a few more cuts to occur within the next couple of days.

I would think Valimaki will get waived

its between Mackey and Meloche for the 6th dman.

Not sure about Stone.

I still think the play is that Stone gets an AHL deal. Keeps him around, good leader for the farm (including for a guy like Poirier) and if they need him mid-season he can be signed to an NHL deal. Win win.

I've seen this presented a few times, as well as the question about whether or not he would have to go through waivers if he then signed an NHL deal. Makes a lot of sense if not waivers are required?
