Default Academy Awards - this Sunday

Does anyone watch them?

my wife and I always do. having an Oscars party this year.
Whomever guesses the most awards correctly gets a bottle of rye.

also looking forward to seeing Queen perform.

I want Rami Malek to win. If he doesn't, I hope that the acting Oscar goes to Willem Dafoe

for supporting actor, I think Mahershala Ali will win, but am cheering for Sam Elliot

would also love to see Spike Lee win for directing.

Looking forward to seeing Black Panther win best picture because reasons.

The other 4 in the Category I have seen: Green Book, Blackkklansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Vice.. All are significantly better than Black Panther. Except Vice, which was terrible.

Vice is one of the only big contender movies I saw this year, and Christian Bale played a better Dick Cheney than Dick Cheney does

I want to rewatch green book - the only thing I remember was that it was really, really, good

I'm just curious what the premise is for BP being nominated over IW?

IW was a way better movie, the (beginning) culmination of 10 years worth of work orchestrated across a dozen movies, directors and hundreds of actors, extras, crews etc..

I really hope Endgame gets a nod at least if that is what they are waiting for.

BP was a good movie, but it wasn't great, and it definitely doesn't deserve to be nominated for best picture.

It had great costumes and music, I will agree with those.

one opinion.

So then what makes Black Panther better than 2018’s other superhero movies like Avengers: Infinity War or Deadpool 2? Well, for one, when it comes to the Oscars deserve’s got nothing to do with it. But one could easily argue that Black Panther is more substantial than the other superhero offerings of 2018—it’s explicitly about something beyond the plot at hand, and frankly it’s far more elegant in juggling its themes than the other major superhero films of 2018. And it should be pointed out that Marvel Studios feels similarly, as they’re only pushing Infinity War for Best Visual Effects in contrast to their full-court-press campaign for Black Panther in all the major categories.

http://collider.com/black-panther-be...ar-nomination/

some people will also argue it's about race and tokenism. especially after #OscarsSoWhite. perhaps.

Siena Yates has said "Sometimes though, you have to take a step back because what often feels like tokenism can actually be the beginning of representation."

I like this comment
"In an era when the awards show has lost audience, relevance, and its place as a communal cultural moment, Coogler’s comic-book movie delivered on all three, and did so with a level of style and craft that rose above its peers in the genre."
https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood...picture-worthy

here's a good article on the matter form just last week.
https://www.cinelinx.com/movie-news/...omination.html

"Many felt as if the film, its story and acting were not worthy of the nomination of the MPAA’s top honor however there are many including this writer who believes it fully is, and here are the many reasons in which it should have and these will hopefully shed some light and give a better understanding as to why this writer believes Black Panther is in the position it is. "

That all these complaints are coming from white people is par for the course. Keep whining. Ya’ll are just telling on yourselves, displaying a refusal to acknowledge the cultural vibrancy and artistry in Black Panther that made it soar above and beyond just another comic book movie.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a bad movie. A terrible movie actually. Fast forward through the music and let me know if there is a movie left. That move is just well done Karaoke.

Greenbook was cringeworthy but I understand how it plays to the older white crown and is Oscar catnip. Spike Lee is going to lose again to a Mystical Negro helping a sympathetic racist.

Klansman was okay, not Spike’s best work but I hope he wins.

If 5 years from now which movie you will remember from this year it would be Black Panther. That doesn’t make it good but it is something that should be recognized.

This year overall was pretty poor for Oscar best picture movies. Though I have only seen the same four you have.

Infinity War was an episode in a TV series.

If you watched it as a stand-alone work I don’t think it makes sense. And while that criticism is absurd if you are just critiquing the movie from an awards show point of view being a self contained piece of art should matter. I also don’t think that it being the penultimate episode should give it extra points.

I think that End Game which will be a much more self contained movie now that the pieces are in place and have a definitive ending it could be considered.

What the hell was that? I tuned in for a minute and thought, "surely this guy isn't wearing a dress" and sure enough. What's the point? People just love the attention.

The Favourite was an excellent movie.

I thought Black Panther was fine. Some of the special effects (the fight on the waterfall) were pretty awful for a high budget film.

How does Black Panther win Best Original score? Ask 100 people off the street to hum the Black Panther theme and I'm pretty sure you go 0-fer

That Cooper/Gaga performance was pretty good.

And Spike Lee finally won an award!

Bohemian Rhapsody was a pretty average movie, but Remi Malek absolutely owned the screen so I'm quite happy to see him win it
