I don't think the problem is that there haven't been hit movies nominated, it's that a hit movie hasn't won the big prize, for years, even when they've had good options. It's not like The Revenant winning over Spotlight would've been an upset, or La La Land over Moonlight, or American Sniper over Birdman, or Gravity over 12 Years a Slave.

People just don't care anymore. Everyone knows Black Panther won't win, and neither will A Star is Born or Bohemian Rhapsody, it'll be one of the other niche movies that nobody saw, and they'll continue to wonder why their viewership goes down again this year.

I think people just don't care what elitist critics think anymore. If you love a certain movie a lot do you really need the justification of the Oscar voters?

This article kind of states why the popular film award is kind of a slap in the face to the average moviegoer;

Well it isn't the Oscar's fault that the general public are a bunch of morons who only watch crap. Why should they pick awful movies to win just for ratings? What is this the grammys?

There also isn't a lot of room for adult dramas anymore. Theatres and the nature of releases mean studios basically only want tentpoles.

Then you add on the fact that when studios do make adult dramas that have wide appeal, the Academy largely ignores those movies. They've fallen in love with the indie darling flicks.

One of the Oscar noms for documentary feature, Of Fathers and Sons, is streaming on Kanopy. You can watch it for free on if you have a Calgary Public Library or U of C Library account. It is incredible and fearless journalism.

Even if you were only picking Marvel movies, Infinity War was clearly a better film. It's clearly a weak field altogether, but even so, this is an incredibly transparent attempt to address prior years' controversies. Borderline tokenism.

Aquaman absolutely deserved a VFX, and costume nomination IMO. Also best original song with Ocean 2 Ocean from Pitbull

We will have to agree to disagree on what what qualifies as "very talented".
But to be fair, I have not seen the movie. Perhaps acting is the secret talent her crappy music was hiding.

Keep an eye out for Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga's concert Cheek to Cheek. it often plays on pbs under "great performances" it will give you an idea of what kind of artist she is, and you get the bonus of tony bennett.

other than that, since you didn't see the movie, no use discussing your

Thanks tips. It's a discussion forum, I'll discuss as I choose.
You're welcome to ignore me if you can't handle sometime taking a shot at your hero pop stars.

Lady Gaga is a supremely talented musician, any accolade she gets, including Oscars for her music is more than deserved. Her acting though? Wooden at best in A Star is Born.

Bradley Cooper's acting and Gaga's music made up for what was a disjoined awkwardly paced movie.

Bohemian Rhapsody won’t win becuase it’s a terrible movie. If you take away Queen’s Music it would be unwatchable.

Watch Queen concert videos instead, the movie was a dumpster fire.

I always knew Lady Gaga had some talent, but that album stopped me cold when I first heard it. She is incredible there.

Some people can't get past the type of music Lady Gaga burst onto the music scene with, in order to see what she really is, and that is an unbelievably talented singer and musician.

Yup. I was one of those who hated her at first. I thought she was another brainless popstar. I was very, very wrong about her. I've done a full 180 on her and I think she's one of the most talented artists of any kind out there at the moment.

And she was very authentic in A Star Is Born. I don't get the comments saying she was wooden. She was anything BUT wooden in that film. Surprised the heck out of me how natural she was on screen.
