Downtown Hotels.
Back to Calgary again for a couple games in the new year. I'm looking for recommendations on downtown Hotels with a pool and close to the train. Last year we stayed at the Days Inn? On Macleod trail and it wasn't bad. Easy Parking and close enough to the train, but nothing really within walking distance. Is there a good place close to Stephen Avenue and restaurants and what not or am I better of back at the days inn? My wife and I will have our two kids age 6 and 8 with us and would really like to park the truck and leave it there for 3 days. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The Westin and International Hotel are both three blocks from the CTrain and you can use the plus 15 to get around. The International hotel has a big parking lot beside it and I think the westin has an underground one.
The Hyatt is right on the train like and has Stephan avenue on thebther side.

Mind my ignorance, but what is the plus 15?

It's an indoor network of buildings connected by bridges, so you can get to many places downtown without going outside.

Ah yes, I had read about it. I lived in Calgary many years ago and don't remember this. Do they still have the shopping mall downtown?

Yup, it's creatively called "The Core".

Parking in downtown Calgary is exceedingly expensive - parking at the International is approximately $32 a day on top of the room rate. If you plan to stay downtown, keep that in mind.

With this plus 15, will it take me to Stephen Avenue also? If I stay somewhere else and take the train just wondering if that's an option.

Yup, you can get to Scotia Center from the +15 and it's right beside Stephen Ave. Or you can take the +15 to Bankers hall or the Core shopping center and Stephen ave is right there. Lot's of options.

Yes, the +15 can get you to Stephen ave, though plenty of restaurants aren't accessible without going to street level. Keep in mind with a family of 4, if you stay out of downtown you will be paying at least $10-$15 for the LRT, so you may not save much on parking. The west end of downtown by the Sandman has cheaper parking, easy to find under $20 if you are fine with walking a few blocks after dropping stuff off at the hotel. Or park there, for $24 I think.

Unless it's exceedingly cold, or it's convenient, don't get too hung up on the plus 15.
If you wanted to go from the International Hotel to Stephen Ave near the Bay or The Core, it's a 5 minute walk outside straight south. Maybe 10 minutes accounting for small children and bad luck on the lights.
If you took the Plus 15, assuming you have no problem navigating, you're looking at double the time.

Taking a family on the train could equal the cost of paying for parking, depending on how often you do it.
I realized this when my parents were in town recently and I took them to a hockey game. We took the train to the Dome, which I normally do. However, the cost of three train fares there and back really didn't save me any money.

You could look for an AirBnb at a condo in downtown or near Victoria Park (close to the dome).
Most modern condos have heated parkades and you won't get charged extra for parking.

I’ve had good experiences with the Marriott downtown. Typically can find good rates on Priceline etc. Great location. If you have a decent budget, I’ve heard great reviews re Hotel Le Germaine (also great location).

I've never even thought of going this route. I'm not overly concerned about heatrd parking and what not, just somewhere I can fit.
