How Andrew Mangiapane navigated the uneven road to the NHL with help from the Blue Lagoon
Quote:
Snubbed for 30 rounds over two OHL midget drafts. Ignored for 375 picks over two more NHL drafts. Held goal-less for 26 appearances, over two years, for the Calgary Flames.
No one embarks on an underdog odyssey of this magnitude entirely on his own.
Andrew Mangiapane had company.
Along for the part of the ride into the NHL postseason — and, indeed, serving for a time as his carrier — was one faithful presence.
Garnet Hathaway, reminded of it, laughs. “Yeah, the Blue Lagoon.”
Referencing the 2006 Saturn Vue bought by Mangiapane and Rasmus Andersson during their rookie season in Stockton, Calif., Hathaway starts to paint a picture. “You don’t see many of them on the road. That thing was just a bright royal blue, like you couldn’t imagine. And boxy as could be.”
But what the model lacks in luxury, it makes up for in dependability. Thank goodness, given the automotive alternatives hatched in the early going, a couple of which defied practicality.

Sorry for the crappy screen cap, but this is from last night’s game winning goal:
Mangiapane celebrating with Hathaway, and a blurry Rasmus joining in. All Stockton boys, aka the 209 Crew.

It’s so impactful when our players are developed from within. Just amazing

Yes it really makes a huge difference.
Those great Canucks teams around 2010, a huge part of their team came up together through the Moose.
Kesler, Burrows, Bieksa, Raymond, Hansen, Edler, Corey Schneider, Rick Rypien. Say what you want about the Canucks but those guys played for each other and that makes a huge difference in the NHL. Also something the Oilers don't get.
