Default What does the NHL have to do to fix officiating?

Hate to be that guy, but year-on-year it keeps getting worse.

Whether you agree it was a problem tonight or not, I think we all agree it’s a problem league-wide. So how does the NHL fix this? (because honestly this issue punishes the league’s most dedicated fans)

The non call hook on Gaudreau was as awful as it gets.

Flames playing mostly in the opposition zone 60 minutes/game and winning - all problems fixed! Don't need all 32 GM's and the league to fix the refs issues.

I am not seeing a lot of officiating posts on any AV's boards. Not the problem.

Jesus, I missed this part of the game and finally saw it.

Compare to this penalty to create a 2 minute 5-on-3:

I don't think there is a damn thing the league can do to prevent missed calls, that's the speed of the game and all teams have to live with it, the inconsitency of how regular season is called versus playoffs has always bugged me, the same game should be called all the way through

The refs didn't seem to see much tonight, either. Especially Valimaki getting a stick/blade upside the head, despite a linesman looking right at it.

2 different standards. Flames haven’t been good but there’s clearly been two different standards since this series has started. Beginning in game 1.

Really makes you want to not give the NHL any more money. So much wasted time just to see your team get boned when the games matter the most. Some complete missed calls against the flames compounded with backbreaking soft penalties at crucial time in games. The whistle has been swallowed for large portions of this series but then a weak tripping call gets called at the end of regulation, but when Gaudreau gets hauled down its ####ing embellishing. Such a damn joke. Completely over this garbage and may have to revaluate why I care in wasting my team on hockey when the league not only changes the rules for the playoffs, but then fails to implement any sort of consistency. I’ll always be a fan but the league has completely turned me off from being emotionally invested any further.

I’ve been on the side of some real #### calls by referees, as have most on this site, but this post season really has been ridiculous to watch and it’s not me being sour over losing. The only way the flames have gotten penalties in this series is from more than obvious infractions, even then the obvious infractions have been missed. This was my last straw

Gaudreau needs to find a new approach when he talks to refs. You are not going to get calls if you bitch like he does.

I’ve been a loyal season ticket holder for more than 20 years and I’ve had it.

Gary Bettman is a lawyer. I would love to package up all these clips in an email to him and present the evidence as to why good fans like us are bailing on the league.

I had a feeling we would get screwed by the refs again tonight. And they did not disappoint.

Unfortunately he could care less, this series is great for the league as they now will get to compete with the Broncos and Nuggets for popularity in a mediocre American market that will only invest into teams when they are good. He loves this ####

You could feel that Backlund call coming ever since the Flames scored the first goal. The refs were letting everything go but that patented NHL “give the trailing team a chintzy PP near the end of the game” was inevitable.

It’s mind boggling that the HNIC panel was suggesting the Avs would have to be prepared for another patented NHL “even up call”. What the $&@! is this crap?

I’m just so done wasting what precious little free time I have on this garbage.

This is ridiculous. When I look at that Fantenberg “hook” I can’t help but feel MacKinnon should have received an embellishment penalty.

The refs are not even in the top 5 reasons the Flames are in the position they're in.
