Just wanted to throw this into the conversation, linesmen are allowed to identify and report major penalties to the referees.
With both referees not making an initial call and / or raising their arms, I am fairly certain that one of the linesmen made the call and provided the information to the refs (in the 4 man officials conference ) that led to the major penalty.

Referees Dan O’Halloran and Eric Furlatt, who called Game 7 between #VGK and #sjsharks, did not advance to Round 2. It’s the first time in more than a decade that O’Halloran has missed the Conference Final, according to

So I'm not saying they should be.... But shouldn't they?
Put the power to review them in the hands of the officials? Or automatic reviews on injury plays? I don't know.
I wonder if any rule changes come of this.
Rule changes might, and that's the real shame of all this.
We are now wasting time calling back goals for players being offside the width of a skin cell because one egregious mistake happened that caused everyone to panic and demand a rule change to add video review on offsides.
I'd like to see us not repeat that mistake a second time.

George McPhee says the NHL did reach out re: Game 7 and admit a mistake on the Cody Eakin major penalty.
i'd be happier if the NHL actually stepped up and said that publicly like the NFL did when they blew the call in the Saints game...
not sure what the answer is though...i think Hrudey said they should get rid of the offside challenge and replace it with reviews for majors... not sure if that works either...
the offside and the goalie challenges have been very frustrating, the latter especially, due to the inconsistency.... i wish the NHL just adopted the "vertical plane" idea the NFL has for TDs... its pretty tough to see if one's blade is on the ice, though i can see that just shifting over as players stop worrying about keeping their blade down if the vertical plane is adopted...
I think the offside review would be a lot better if they could only review it in real-time no slow motion or freeze frame. That way only the real obvious would be called back.

Yet there's still 1-2 posters here that argued to the death it was the right call.
I guess you will never get 100% agreement on anything, even the most obvious.

In retrospect, I was definitely wrong.

The Saints had a whole lot bigger beef IMO. This was a horrible call but never should have resulted in 4 goals.

Perhaps if Vegas' players didn't do dumb things, like hitting a guy that was airborne, then maybe they wouldn't have given the referee anything to make a call on in the first place.
Just like the Backlund trip in game 4. Don't give the refs anything to call, and you won't have anything to complain about.
The fact that the Sharks scored 4 isn't the refs fault.

It actually is their fault if it wasn't a five minute major then the penalty would have ended after the first goal returning the game to 5 on 5 and vegas would have still had eakins. I dont get this line of thinking yeah vegas crapped the bed but they shouldn't have been down a man for 5 straight minutes

Most major penalties don't result in a goal against, let alone 4.
