9.5M for a player that has never scored 30 goals? Glad we passed.

He is absolutely going to score 30 this season. More to the point, look at Patrice Bergeron's career stats. That's your comparable player.
This is a pretty solid contract for an excellent player.

Also 9.5 in a state with no income tax, likely would have been at least a little bit more in Calgary

Also not like you are getting him at 23 - he's 27 when this contract starts. So you are paying that for him until he's 34, and he's had some injury injuries the last couple of years.
If you could have made that deal and then got him at a good value deal like $7.5M for 8 years then sure. But to give up those assets and have to pay UFA prices on a contract... that's tough.

Yeah, that was an rfa contract and he’s underpaid and that’s part of why the flames are so good this year. He’s gonna get a contract probably bigger than stone’s next go around

Stone is going to make Vegas better, but I'm not terribly sad we passed on him. Especially with Valimaki was the hang up.

I am glad the flames steered clear and that Vegas gave up such a good young player. Stone is great but that is too much money for his historical production

Calgary would have had to come in at $10M+/yr to match the tax savings.

I wouldn't wanna do something that someone worse than us would do for the sake of it. Good on Tre for looking out for our team today and the future.

Stone sets a ceiling on Tkachuk. Stone is better and is a UFA. Tkachuk would probably have an 8 handle on an 8 year deal after this. Maybe a 7 handle.
I don't think it will be an 8 year deal though, I expect shorter.

They're going to not enjoy that contract in the final 3 years I think.
But you do you McPhee

Bergeron is a comparable? Is Stone a Centre? I guess i was not following this enough. Anyway its a very high salary for 8 years 4-5 of which will be in his 30s. The Flames could not have afforded that nor is it a good use of limited resources.
I don't like that deal.

again okay with not getting Stone for the price that was paid. Don't get me wrong, I would have been happy with the player, but too much on both what was given up and what is being paid.
I like what we have and look forward to seeing how we can get better next year.

Stone has a similar effect on advanced stats as Bergeron even as a winger.
This is a winger that's finished 6th in Selke voting, which with biases like yours, is even all the more impressive.

Yeah...no way the Flames should have paid that much for Stone....glad we steered clear. The price for us would've been 1st and Valimaki, and then ending up with that monster of a contract in our cap strained system. Just not feasible.

A quick look at the Vegas cap situation and it seems to me after Stone's deal kicks in next year they will need to shed some salary for next season, not to mention they still have to sign Karlsson to a new deal.

Pretty much every UFA contract signed for 8 years will stink at the end.
That's the name of the game. If you want to contend, you have to plug your nose at times.
If we get to face Mark Stone over the next years, I'll be sure to remember that eventually his contract might stink.

I'm glad we passed now if that was the nut. 8 X 9.5? GTFO.
Still not happy that we did nothing though. Management and coaching staff must really believe in the group that is here. let's roll on to the playoffs and see what shakes out.

Umm we ain’t giving up Valimaki at all. The Flanes would WAY rather give up 1st than Valimaki
