That is a pretty hefty cost for a pure rental. Costs are pretty high this year.

Disappointing we didn't land him, but that's a pretty hefty price. No way he re-signs there.

Winnipeg gets bigger. Although it hasn't been an issue in one off games, that won't be the case in a 7 game series.

So their cure for losing their rental is to get another rental, at a similar cost.

High cost for a rental but hayes is a substantial upgrade over little for 2c there. I think it's a great move for Winnipeg. I would have made the trade from cgy as a 1st+ mangiapane.

He's not an upgrade over Backlund for 2C here. So we'd be paying that price for a 3C rental. Or he plays line 2 wing, but is he that much better than Bennett in that role? Or a "gets his groove back" Neal?

Winnipeg gets Hayes but their defence is a mess right now. Winnipeg isn’t going anywhere in the playoffs without their defence getting healthy and the players in general learn how to stop taking penalties

Hayes is basically Colborne that scores more consistently. He is soft as Buttah

"Shenanigans"? Stastny was a UFA who signed a competitive offer from the reigning Western Conference champions.

But you are right that he left a big hole in Winnipeg. It will be equally as hilarious to see Kevin Hayes walk this summer after the Jets are bounced in Round #1 or #2.

I just wanted to use the word shenanigans.

It certainly sounded like Stastny was going to sign with Winnipeg and then boom, Vegas.

I find Hayes as a bit of a risky pickup. He'd been a consistent 40-50 point guy before this year and then explodes to 42 in 51 this year.

Rangers worked that perfectly, selling high for sure.

Honestly, I would have preferred Zuccarello to Hayes. The smaller guy plays bigger and has all the details in the game.

I really like Zuccarello, he plays with a lot of jam. I can imagine that he will be highly sought after in free agency.

I think its mostly just an ice time/role thing. AV used him more defensively, less minutes, less skilled linemates.

New coach, puts him more in offensive zone, more skilled linemates (ie. Kreider), more PP time, etc.

I think he'll be a good fit with skilled wingers in Winnipeg where he can use his ability to protect and distribute the puck to skilled shooters (Connor and Ehlers), and potentially play the Wheeler spot on the 2nd PP unit, where his frame is conducive to a similar strategy.

Stone is the bigger fish, but the Hayes pickup strikes me as a nice price for Winnipeg, and a uniquely strong fit on their second line that has shown struggles in lieu of Little aging/performance decline.
