Hayes made more sense for the jets than any winger out there.
Upgrading their #2 C spot, like they did last year, seems like the best decision for them.

Actual question - would you give up our first round pick if you knew if meant we made it through a couple rounds? I would.

Exactly ... I think Calgary played this well. It seemed like it was Winnipeg/Calgary on Stone, and now it's Calgary and next tier. That can't feel good for Dorion.

In other words, they only will include one if they've already confirmed they can re-sign him

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Told no salary retained in the Kevin Hayes deal so Winnipeg taking Hayes salary full-on

Winnipeg blinked. And now one of the prime candidates for Stone is gone, putting pressure on Ottawa.
It's all coming together. And Brad iron-balls Treliving is going to own Dorion.

My answer is in this question - you think they can't do that without getting a two month player?
I think the Flames, as constructed now, including getting Neal back, adding Stone, and a couple boys from the farm for injury depth, make it to the WC finals. And are in the thick of cup contention.
Anything can happen in the POs but I see no team in the west that is as good top to bottom.

I think that's a high price for Hayes, from WPG's perspective, because I think there is little chance he signs there (he has shown in the past that he has a preference where he plays). And as a pure rental, that's a lot.

That's a rather existential question. If you mean make it through a couple rounds and then get bounced, what's the point? I guess if you mean like a guaranteed bye to the finals I suppose I would, but I don't think Kevin Hayes does that for you.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Conditional pick in Jets/Hayes deal is contingent on Winnipeg winning the Cup.
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
The conditional pick in the Kevin Hayes deal is a fourth-rounder if the Jets win the Stanley Cup. Otherwise no extra pick.

If I’m Stone, and I know I had a chance to play in Calgary with my brother, there’s no way I’m re-signing in Ottawa for sure.
Doiron will be up against the wall here, at the risk of getting nothing. I think the rest of the league knows that they’d have to compete with us over signing him too, so they’d be most likely just paying for a rental. I just think Stone is going to wait for an offer from Calgary before he signs anywhere this summer now.

I agree with you. I also think Valimaki is going to be an important part of the big club in the playoffs as well and is sometimes overlooked as to what he will be able to contribute when he returns.

It goes both ways though, as you there is now one less decent rental fwd available to the remaining buyers. Vegas & Preds are still in this and maybe so is Boston. One of the buyers is going to blink before Dorion does.
