Flames McKenzie: dealbreaker for Flames is that Sens want Valimaki in Stone package

News Update

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
At last check #Flames still very interested in Mark Stone, but Ottawa’s price is “ridiculously high”.

Sense is Sens starting point is multiple 1sts + one of Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington + more. Calgary extremely happy with current group. Not willing to sell the farm.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
You can understand Calgary being totally unwilling to give up either Valimaki or Andersson. Has to be a non-starter. As much as Stone fits perfectly, anything with either those two involved makes no sense.

#Flames understandably trust in the group with all they’ve accomplished.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
A roster player would likely have to be involved to make a Stone deal work for Calgary, too, in terms of cap and contracts.

A lot to consider between now and tomorrow at 1 pm mountain. We’ll see if Ottawa’s price comes down at all. #Flames

split off from the trade speculation thread. think this is worthy enough for a discussion in its own thread

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
It is, at best, a long shot — in order for it to happen Eugene Melnyk would have to step up the club offer and Mark Stone would have to be fully prepared to do what he hasn’t done so far (commit) — but it’s worth noting the door to re-signing him in OTT has not been locked shut.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
That said, the primary focus for OTT GM Pierre Dorion is obviously trading Stone and serious suitors include WPG, NSH, CGY, BOS, amongst others. Usual grumbling about the price being way too high, but it is, as they say, a process.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Some may surmise a potential long-and-drawn Stone auction could grid lock other transactions for secondary pending UFA wingers, but I believe some who feel they’re priced out of the Stone market could act quickly to get Zuccarello from NYR or Johansson from NJ, amongst others.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Again I would think Calgary would want an idea of whether they can sign Stone before paying the huge price. Jets and Preds ok with rental situation in my opinion

Man, I know Stone is good but hes not nearly THAT good to go into a heavyweight title fight with other teams in a bidding war. My very pragmatic hope is hes just in there driving up the price so he can push the big red button on his other targets at a fairer price. This Stone stuff scares me. Much more than any other possible trade. Just don't think the juice is worth the squeeze.

And please stop with the Neal trade proposals. Hes not being traded in year 1 of a 5 year deal. I cannot recall a trade ever where a player signed with a new team on a long term contract only to be traded before the end of his first season. Not once. Because it simply does not happen.

I dont see Mark Stone as the player to skewer our salary structure over or sell the farm for.

While he's injured on top of it. And why the #### would they take Neal if they plan on rebuilding.

He's basically the wing version of Bergeron. I think it's worth it.

I'm on board if we can add Stone to the core. He's an ideal addition, but of course the cost is scary.

Not interested in paying a lot for a pure rental, but there's always the consideration that the Flames could simply wait and try and sign him as a UFA. Of course the idea is to give the team the best odds heading into the playoffs while in a position we haven't been in since 2006, and who knows when/if we get back to. There's definitely some merit to going for it now...

Hard to weigh the cost/reward of 4 assets for Stone, vs the smaller cost for a Hayes, or Zuccarello, or Simmonds, etc.

We already have that guy apparently, his name is Elias Lindholm.
