Honestly to me, the Norris Trophy is just as important if you're a defenseman as the Stanley Cup. It is physical validation that you are among the best in the world - past and present - at what you do. I'm rooting for Gio, he's earned it.

he's in a league of his own this year. There's outstanding offensive defensemen in this league who'll probably score more points, but his defense really separates him from the pack. Just take the game yesterday, there were several excellent plays where he'd knock a puck away to break up a potential breakaway, block shots or lift a stick. The offensive numbers are just gravy. He's just darn good at both ends and I'm super happy that he finally gets the recognition he deserves.
When he took a shot in the leg yesterday, but still busted his ass to get back and make a huge defensive play. Absolute beauty.
Exactly. That two-second play was a perfect illustration of what makes him so special, and such a great captain. He leads by example.
If he doesn't win the Norris this year, it will be an absolute travesty. The only serious threat is Burns, IMO. Giordano has been better, and Burns already has one.

I think to win the cup, you need a D who puts on a Norris-worthy performance. We've seen cup winning teams get away with not having an elite #1G, or average winger/C depth. But I can't recall a cup winner who hasn't had a true #1D who had a great season. I truly believe our 35 year old captain is the key to having a great playoff run.
I just hope Gio doesn't suffer a fluke injury down the stretch and is able to take his game to even the next level in the playoffs. I cringed when he blocked that shot vs the Isles near the end last game. But that just goes to show the type of player he is.
The man deserves to have a good cup run on his resume.

Didn’t Pittsburgh win their second cup without Letang?

That is true. However the year before in the 2016 cup run he was 4th in Norris voting. Pens are special though, since they do have Crosby and Malkin down the middle.
Obviously a lot has to go right for a team to win the cup. I've just always viewed the most important piece as having an elite D.

I made that hashtag previously and then when I looked at it I saw it can be misread if you look at it quickly.
Yikes. Didn't notice that until you pointed it out. If it's any consolation, I don't think he's one of those either...

What a feel good story this is. Even if he doesn’t win it, that a player can go undrafted and work his ass off and achieve what he has accomplished in his career. Man, do I want to see this guy get a chance to hoist the Cup.
