Something that cannot be underestimated in this discussion that is fairly unique with Fox when compared to most college hockey prospects is the value of earning a Harvard degree. His decision to return for his senior year is likely affected a good deal by this reality.

Can’t really blame the kid for not wanting to sign in Carolina with a crazy owner and depth at his position

I just find it weird when players pick specific teams they want to sign with (ala Tim Erixon in New York) and get total tunnel vision. It rarely works out for them. Sign where your opportunities are best.

I'd love it if the Flames scooped him up as a FA.

Some room for him now in Stockton with all the graduating blueliners in the Show.

Fox will be 22 this time next year, he isn't going anywhere with room in the AHL. The teams that court him will be throwing NHL time in his face.

Yup.

Even last year with rumours he wouldn’t sign were out there there were some things that kept his value somewhat (Still 2 years from UFA, Canadian City, Deep D-Core, etc) and let people think it may have just been his situation in Calgary.

Now it’s clear he’s going UFA and wants the Harvard degree.

Good job of selling early by Trevling.

Given what's in the news lately, he could have easily used his hockey earnings and purchased his way to a top notch education.

Gaudreau did exactly that (went back for year 3 and not year 4) and the Flames tried to sign him after year 2.

The Canes probably assumed he didn’t want to play in Canada and they had a good shot to sign him being on the east coast

The only thing that makes sense about this trade is that when owners decide to get involved in hockey OPs, all bets are off.

There was a window to absolutely fleece that organization and I'm glad it was Tre who saw the opportunity and stepped to the table.

Its cases like this and Vesey, Justin Schultz that make me think college players should have to declare for the draft when they are ready to exit school. Just like football, basketball etc.

How often has a player going to Harvard have left after 3 years? Any at all? I think a few have left after the first or second year but not sure about 3 years.

As of today, Elias Lindholm has more points than Ferland and Hamilton combined. Nevemind the extra 30+ Hanifin has put up.

Best. TRADE. Ever.

This is so Anti-Player

A player gives up his college eligibility in those sports by declaring before they have any guarantees about draft position let alone roster spot. If they guess wrong and end up getting cut they could lose they potential career. It is completely unnecessary to force this risk onto players to protect a teams draft capital.

A simple fix might be to extend the draft rights of college players that the team that drafted them has the right to match any contracts in draft plus 3 and 4 years for college players. This way a team can’t just hold them in college by not offering them a contract but the players still have to go to the team that drafted them.

I just spent my lunch break rereading parts of this thread. Highly recommended!

There were a lot of really smart posters who though this trade was terrible! Some of the reactions around page 7 or 8 are really great. Very few were calling this as a Flames win. The Fox inclusion really seemed to be a breaking point for most. A few pages later, more optimism starts to appear, and it just gets more positive as you move ahead.

Now, it's a slam dunk Flames win in less than a year. So much drama in one thread!

I think the fact the rumor 2 days prior to the trade was Hamilton for both made the inclusion of Ferland and Fox make people react that way. Also people don’t follow the Canes so they see a 40-45pt forward and a 30pt Dman coming back

One of the reasons I loved the trade immediately was due to the pedigree of the players we picked up. Both former 5th overall picks and both with potential to take massive steps forward. Swedes can sometimes take until they are in the mid-late 20’s to truly break out (Sedins, Backlund) so I had hope Lindholm would “pop” as Treliving put it. This was also a player many thought would be a Flame on draft day so we all knew him. Hanifin was also highly touted and many had him as the clear #3 in that draft after McDavid and Eichel.

I was also a big time cheerleader on the trade Dougie train when many were not a fan of moving him
