Obligatory: "March is Calgary's snowiest month."
Not saying we should like it, but we shouldn't be surprised. April, unfortunately, gets nearly as much snow as March.

It's just been kinda crappy since mid February. It's about 50/50 if I can get out for a mountain bike in March, certainly not this year! I still have a good foot of snow in my yard as well. I think without a good hit of warming in March it's felt worse than usual.

The snows fine. But damned if hovering below freezing 90% of the time in March isn’t really lame.

I figured when January and February were decent that we would pay in March/April.

Seems like the western part of North America has been fairly crappy for the past month. Here in Portland we've had a grand total of 6 days at or above normal temperatures in March -- the rest, well below. We're supposed to be in the 15-18 degree range for highs currently and yet 6 out of the next ten days are set to be 7-9 with rain. Actually woke up to an inch of snow Saturday which is highly unusual this late in the year.
My biggest peeve is this will probably shorten an already short mountain hiking season. Some years, I can hit some of the low-mid elevation stuff (3000-5000ft) in early May but if we don't get a good warm stretch sometime soon, it may end up being like last year where I had to wait till mid June until most of the snow had melted

I think you guys are forgetting what a typical year is like.
This is normal. Up and down/snow and unsteady conditions are markers of March.
The back half of April is when we get consistently mild temps day and night.
We're still in the in-between chaos phase. Warm sunny days sandwiched by blizzards.
It's that first week or so of nhl playoffs when we feel turn of the season.
Remember we are landlocked and 51°N, adjust expectations accordingly

This year is different enough that I have ice dams on my garage roof.

Not letting me quote, but @Trent...this year is not normal. Our average daily highs have been well below the average for the month of March, and the amount of snow remaining is well above average as well. My FB memories can confirm the latter.

It's "normal" but we're also on pace for it to be the coldest March since 2014.
The problem is we haven't had an evening above freezing yet* so the ice dams keep freezing up overnight. The same goes for the ski hills. Winsport is far far far icier than normal at this time of the year. There have only been 2 or 3 daytime highs above average and that hasn't been enough to overcome the evening freezes.
Also March hasn't had a day above 10'C yet. That's rare. Going back to 2014 you can expect at least one day time high in the 15'C to 20'C range in March. So far 8.3'C is the warmest it's been in March.
*There was one at 0.8'C but close enough...

Yeah, I concur, I already had my summer vehicle out of storage well before this time in March last year.

About 3/4th's of our March and spring in generally more pleasant than this, with warmer temps and less snow on the ground. 1/4 generally match this, and looking at some almanac data that matches well with my gut feeling on this.

I don't believe that to be true. November was way below average right into December (Dec. 1 was coldest Dec. 1 in over 100 years). It was January into mid February that was above average but everything before and after has been below average hovering between historically cold or historical snowfall. I don't recall many years ever where the lows have hit below -20 in every single month from November to March as that's quite a five month run of cold.

It may not be as nice as we’d like but at least we can all laugh at Regina. It’s still mid winter. -20 and windy AF.

Can confirm. Was there on the weekend and woke up to -23° yesterday morning. They're not supposed to even get a sniff of anything close to 0° until next week perhaps (forecast did not go further than that) and normals are 4° at this time of year. And a ton of snow still on the ground.

There's finally a double digit high in the forecast. Not until April 9th, mind you, but it's a start.

LOL, you are trusting a forecast 12 days out? In the spring? In Calgary?
