The 2024 draft is looking more insane by the day. Potential steals (yes I know all of them won't hit) everywhere. So fun to watch their progression.

Misa on the ice and contributing for all 4 goals for while Martone had nothing is quite shocking.
The OHL guys are developing incredibly well.. what an exciting time to be a Flames fan

Battaglia could very well end up being the Flames best drafted forward from last year, big, strong, slick and very driven, Flames had to take Basha at 41 and with that I thought for sure he would be gone. Central Scouting had him at 42, Smaht(biased but who I trust the most) at 45, Button at 64, THN at 63.
Maybe teams looked at FCHockey's(who I least trust) 139
I was told Peter Loubardias jumped for joy when they got him and said "one word- awesome pick"

It kinda seems like Battaglia is a bit of the forgotten guy from what appears to be a great draft. It felt like he started the year hot and got people excited early but then the attention fell off. Mews, Misa, Gridin, and Parekh have (rightfully so) drawn a lot of attention. Basha has had injury problems but has the local factor.
What does Battaglia need to work on the most? How is his skating? Is there any chance he makes the WJC? (assuming the buttheads at Hockey Canada doesn't shoot themselves in the foot again..)
HM shout out to Jamieson who has been fun to follow too.

Battaglia is not a poor skater, but his deficiencies were amplified in camp this year, watching him with the pros. He was behind the play a bit, so he's got work to do there. He reminds me a bit of Zach Hyman.

Jan.19th:
Battaglia was named first star in a 6-2 victory over Erie, with 2g, 2a, and +2. With 9 points in his last 3 games, he is now tied with Luke Misa for 12th in OHL scoring, with 41gp/25g/32a/57pts,+4, 22 PIM.
London beats Sudbury, 8-1, but we don't care about that; we want to know if our boy Henry Mews got a point. Well, he did- a primary assist on the Wolves' only goal. He is tied for 10th-overall in OHL scoring, and first in scoring by D, with 43gp/12g/46a/58pts,-7, 54 PIM.
All zeroes for Morin in a 2-1 loss to Acadie-Bathurst. He is 5th-overall in plus/minus, and 3rd in scoring by D, with 40gp/10g/29a/39pts,+27, 20 PIM.
Gridin gets 1a (primary) and was even, in a 2-1 OT win over Gatineau. He is 8th in Q scoring, and 12th in plus/minus, with 40gp/24g/27a/51pts,+21, 21 PIM.
Wonder if the Blades are playing Laing at C? He gets 1g, was even, and goes 8/14 in faceoffs, in a 3-2 loss to Speedy Creek. 41gp/11g/14a/25pts,+7, 31 PIM.
All zeroes for Lipinski, who went 9/17 in faceoffs, in a 3-1 victory over Brandon. 34gp/7g/26a/33pts,+4, 26 PIM.
1a, and a +1 for Hurtig in a 4-1 win over Regina. He is tied for 8th in plus/minus, with 34gp/3g/8a/11pts,+29, 20 PIM.

Yeah, a little- only 5 points in January, a span of 8 games. In his last 15 games, he has 12 points. In 9 of those games, he had no points.

lol Love Loubardias' enthusiasm over the pick but someone should explain to him the difference between "one" and "two"

You must have missed it. That goes a way back with him and I added it in.

Anyone know what the new agreement means for signing requirements, etc?
Is this a path to UFA for these kids?

I wonder the same.
I assume that they will still be UFA after their D+4 season regardless of CHL/NCAA affiliation. The NCAA route gives CHL players options though where they are still benefitting from not signing (e.g. a top tier degree)

I would expect it's more of a path for gaining an education on bubble players that may not get a contract, and then extending the time to play and get a UFA signing if not signed by drafting team. At least in this case I think it would make sense.

Jamieson was drafted out of the CHL, so he needs to be signed by June 1st 2026 or he goes back into the draft (unless it's different for him since he was drafted in his 2nd year of eligibility)

The 2026 draft could be interesting for the additional number of players who re-enter the draft because of this. Teams may have to up their ELC offer to players they don't want to lose.

We'll have a rundown on FN on Wednesday about how the CBA outlines junior players going to college.
It's not as complex as we thought, actually.
