I think if anyone has a chance to chase down Gretzky’s 12 consecutive 40 goal seasons, it’s Matthews. This year is number 5 and he is 26.

Definitely can see him potentially passing Bossy’s 9

(Thing is, Bossy’s 40 goal seasons were also 9 consecutive 50 goal seasons. The 50 goal consecutive season leaderboard is topped by legends, and Brett Hull)

I don't think they will. If Woll turns into a solid goalie all you need is a couple puck moving D and a bunch of defensive guys on the back end and in your bottom 6 forward group. You can do that on cheap plus if they keep their assets like Cowan and Minten those guys will be on entry level deals. Combine that with the he Cap going up and I think they can keep the core intact and add McDonkey.

Losing is different than choking. When was the last time they actually choked in the playoffs? Maybe 2021, being up 3-1 in the series over Montreal, but that was the 56 game regular season in the all Canadian division because of Covid. 2012-13 is probably the right answer as they were up 4-1 in game 7 against Boston with about 10 minutes left, and gave up 2 goals in the last 80 seconds of the 3rd. But to say they always choke, is not close to being accurate.

Since the 2016-17 season they lost in the first round as the wild card 2 team and twice as the Atlantic 3 seed to the Atlantic 2 seed. None of those are chokes. They won a round in 2021 and 2023 and then lost to teams that went to the finals. 2022 was a 2 seed to a three seed. Again, none are chokes.

2005-06 -> 2011-12 - Missed playoffs
2012-13 - 5 seed that lost to the 4 seed in 7 games
2013-14 -> 2015-16 - Missed playoffs
2016-17 - 8 seed lost to 1 seed
2017-18 - Atlantic 3 seed lost to Atlantic 2 seed
2018-19 - Atlantic 3 seed lost to Atlantic 2 seed
2019-20 - Missed playoffs in COVID season
2020-21 - Won playoff round as Eastern 2 seed over Eastern 3
2021-22 - Atlantic 2 seed lost to Atlantic 3 seed
2022-23 - Beat Tampa and lost to Florida

12 games to get 11 more goals. Unlikely he gets it now imo, but could be that he's saving some mojo for the playoffs for once.

Damn impressive player. He'll probably be at 500 goals before 30... damn.

Oilers getting McDavid and Leafs getting Matthews is a damn crime....but also crazy to think Edmonton had the second best odds of winning the lottery in 15-16.

Imagine if they had won that lottery and had McDavid and Matthews.

This is what I hope for TO - Mathews fails to get 70+ goals, stops at 69. Make Beliefs get swept in first round.

IMO? Goals.

If you want to play the 'Stats game' you cant puff-up Goals.

You can McMarshmallow up 3rd assists in the Oilers building all day long and nobody will say anything, but if you didnt actually put the puck in the net, you aint getting the cookie.

Didn't Matthews go to play in the Switz league so he had more options if the Oilers won the lottery. I think he and his agent definitely had a game plan.

The Leafs lost in the first round against Montreal in 2021? Winning against Tampa last year was the first time they advanced to the second round since 2004.

The Leafs weren't even in the East Division in 2020-21. They were in the North Division with all the other Canadian teams, and lost in the first round.

2019-2020 is officially "missed the playoffs", but I think the loss in the play-in round to Columbus can be considered a big choke.

Thanks for reminding me that the Oilers got beat out by the old and aging Hawks that year in the play-in. E=NG
