I think if anyone has a chance to chase down Gretzky’s 12 consecutive 40 goal seasons, it’s Matthews. This year is number 5 and he is 26.

I don't think they will. If Woll turns into a solid goalie all you need is a couple puck moving D and a bunch of defensive guys on the back end and in your bottom 6 forward group. You can do that on cheap plus if they keep their assets like Cowan and Minten those guys will be on entry level deals. Combine that with the he Cap going up and I think they can keep the core intact and add McDonkey.

Losing is different than choking. When was the last time they actually choked in the playoffs? Maybe 2021, being up 3-1 in the series over Montreal, but that was the 56 game regular season in the all Canadian division because of Covid. 2012-13 is probably the right answer as they were up 4-1 in game 7 against Boston with about 10 minutes left, and gave up 2 goals in the last 80 seconds of the 3rd. But to say they always choke, is not close to being accurate.

Since the 2016-17 season they lost in the first round as the wild card 2 team and twice as the Atlantic 3 seed to the Atlantic 2 seed. None of those are chokes. Imagine if they had won that lottery and had McDavid and Matthews.

Didn't Matthews go to play in the Switz league so he had more options if the Oilers won the lottery. I think he and his agent definitely had a game plan.

2019-2020 is officially "missed the playoffs", but I think the loss in the play-in round to Columbus can be considered a big choke.
